YST Torch Relay
Congratulations to Mrs Riddoch and Mrs Burston who organised an afternoon of fun activities for children from local primary schools to welcome the Olympic Torch to Wellsway. This was part of a 2012 legacy programme being run by the Youth Sports Trust with an actual Olympic/Paralympic Torch being passed between Sports Colleges around the country. We received the torch from St Luke's Sports College in Exeter and passed it on to Kingdown Sports College in Warminster. Our Sports Leaders did a fantastic job supporting the event and it was lovely to see the primary children having the chance to run carrying the Olympic Torch. The look on their faces as they did so was priceless and they undoubtedly had an experience that they will never forget. Well done to everyone involved.
Assistant Headteacher (Student Support)
This week we appointed Mr Paul Comber to the post of Assistant Headteacher (Student Support) from a strong field of 68 applicants. Mr Comber is currently Head of Upper School at Writhlington School, where he was previously Head of PE. I am very grateful to all the students who took part in the process. Students were involved as interviewers on the Student panel and Newton House took part in the assembly exercise. Representatives from the student leadership teams also had the opportunity to meet the candidates over lunch. The student perspective on appointments is very important to us at Wellsway and they all did an excellent job. Mr Comber will join Wellsway in September and will take over the Student Support role from Mr White who will be taking on the responsibility for Teaching and Learning. | Mrs Arlidge

Well done
It was a huge pleasure to receive this kind email from a Keynsham resident this week:
"I'm writing to let you know of an incident today where two Wellsway students acted in an excellent way. The boys were approached by an old man who told them he was feeling unwell and asked for their help. He then collapsed onto the ground. The boys called an ambulance from their mobile and asked myself and another passer-by for help. While I spoke with the man, they fetched cushions and blankets and waited with us until the ambulance arrived.
I was very impressed with their mature attitude and calm manner. Kids get such a bad press these days and yet youngsters like this prove there are lots of lovely young adults about. I'm sure they'd be embarrassed to be praised, but thought you'd appreciate it being brought to your attention."
Mrs Arlidge would love to know who these boys were so that she can congratulate them.| Mr White

The Learning to Lead Bike It team has been working hard to raise money to contribute towards the grant obtained by B&NES Sustainable Transport department. This is part of an on-going project to raise awareness of reducing C02 emissions and reducing traffic congestion around the school and becoming more sustainable as a school.

We will be leaving the school at 2.30pm and returning between approximately 5pm and 5.30pm. we will include some breaks along the journey. There will be support from staff, sixth form students, Sustrans and B&NES cycling Coordinator.

Olympic Torch comes to Wellsway
On Tuesday afternoon we celebrated the arrival of the Olympic torch which is travelling round the country to celebrate the legacy of the 2012 Games and to recognise the efforts of the 18 schools in the Country that have contributed most to the Olympic & Paralympic celebrations.
The event is part of the Youth Sport Trust Lead Your Generation programme and the torch was brought to us by St Luke's Sports & Science College in Exeter. It was formally handed over to Millie Stanford & Seth Jenkins who were our nominated torch bearers.
We celebrated in style by inviting a total of 56 pupils (Reception to Year 6) from Chandag, Saltford, Marksbury & St John's to join Wellsway Sports Ambassadors for an afternoon of games on the track. It was wonderful to see all ages of children from different schools having fun working together in teams and my thanks go to Mrs Burston for organising all the activities.
Our thanks also go to Rosie Gyde, George Brown & Becca Sutton and to Stacy Hunt who all entertained us at the event.
On Wednesday we moved the torch on to Kingdown School in Warminster and 10 of the Wellsway Sports Ambassadors travelled with me to make the formal handover as part of a swimming gala that was taking place there. As always the Ambassadors were great representatives of Wellsway School and should be congratulated on their involvement. | Mrs Riddoch

U13 Cricket v St Mary Redcliffe
U13 Cricket v St Mary Redcliffe - Bristol Cup The Year 8 cricket team started its season with a cup game at home against St Mary Redcliffe School. The away team opened the batting and set a target of 66 for 7 from 20 overs. There was some excellent bowling from the 8 Wellsway players that bowled, which kept the score down and took the wickets (H Walters x2, W Thomas, L Holmes, J Tweedie and 2x run out). Wellsway took just 11 overs to reach the target at the expense of just 1 wicket (W Thomas 29 and J Tweedie 18). This was a good opening match that was approached with the right attitude, and suggests this could be a great season for the team.
Congratulations to all the players involved. | Mr Thomas
Under 14 County Basketball Final Wellsway v Beechen Cliff
The Wellsway Warriors made it a clean sweep of the B&NES basketball trophies when the under 14s emulated what the under 16s had done the previous week by becoming B&NES schools basketball champions. If the under 16 final was a straightforward affair, the under 14 final was the complete opposite with two evenly matched teams and a dramatic finish. Beechen Cliff just had the edge on Wellsway throughout the first 3 quarters & going in to the final quarter had built up a lead of 8 points. With only 10 minutes left of their season Wellsway had to gamble & change their tactics to 'A full court press' to try & pressurise Beechen Cliff. Wellsway found its shooting touch to score 11 unanswered points in a fantastic 6 minute period of aggressive defence, pin point passing & deadly shooting. The 3 point lead allowed Wellsway to wind down the clock & organise their defence to ensure a great comeback was complete to the appreciation of a full viewing gallery and an elated bench. The win was nothing less than the boys, deserved who had been meeting up on Saturdays to run extra practice sessions in preparation for the final, deserved Congratulations go to the whole squad who have remained unbeaten throughout their league campaign. Jacob Ware (C), Ben Garsed, Jimmy Ellis, James Downes, Ollie Farrant, Tom bridges, Olly Taylor, Harry Roach, CJ Rumney-Millard, Will Fothergill-Scott, Callum Bishop, Gabe Howell, Steven Buck, Scott Hilton, Oli Maidment, Ben Yeoman. Well done boys! | Mr Ive
U13 Tennis v St Mary Redcliffe
The Year 8 tennis team started their season with a win against St Mary Redcliffe at home. All 4 players: James Ollis, Finn Heslop, David Price and Peter Martens-Drake, won their singles matches and then went on to win their double games too. This was a really good performance from the team who won 3 of the matches 6-0 and only dropped 7 games in total over the 6 matches.
Congratulations to all the players involved. | Mr Thomas
Under 13 Football v B&NES Final
On Wednesday 24th April the B&NES football finals were held at Keynsham football club, where Wellsway played Norton Hill. In a re-run of the final game of last season, both teams knew it would be a very competitive game. Norton Hill took the lead just minutes before half time, but early in the second half Wellsway equalised through a goal from Jed Langley-Stevens. Pressure at both ends of the field saw both teams' goalkeepers very busy. In the end it was Norton hill that got the better of the two teams and won 3-1. The year 8 team should be very proud of finishing runners-up after an excellent season. Man of the match: Joe Jackson. | Mr Evans
