Hi guys,

Just a quick reminder about the NZ RailsCamp on the 22nd of March thru to 25th.

Ticket sales have been strong, but there are still a whole lot left and there is still time to buy them
with the early bird special of NZ$220 before the end of the month when they go up to NZ$260.

More details about the camp here: http://railscamps.com/#nz_mar_2013

For those that have booked, the Bus will be leaving the Wellington Train station at 2pm on the
friday and will be returning from the camp at 10am on the monday. I think it's a 50ish minute
journey.

Also I'd like to announce our first sponsor - Powershop. As well as powering some of your homes
they'll be powering us all up by covering the coffee at the camp. So a big ups to them for that!

If you or your business would be interested in sponsoring NZ RailsCamp - you could cover things
like the Bus, T-Shirts or our IT gear - then please email me on nahum...@gmail.com and we'll
sort something out.

See you there!

Nahum

Hi

I'm a complete newbie to web development and rails.  I'm interested in joining but am worried that I'll be in over my head.  How would the RailsCamp suit someone like me?

Thanks

Hi,

The Rails Camp environment is perfect for you. Lots of people to ask questions of and I think I remember reading that last year at Mt Cheeseman we had people with no knowledge of Rails leaving having built a decent chunk of an application.

At the very least you get a very enjoyable weekend hanging out with a bunch of like minded people.

I hope you come!
Phil

Further to what Phi has said.

Do you have any development experience, ie are you new to everything, or just Web Development? I think this might have more of a bearing on things than not knowing Rails.

If you do have experience than I think that turning up and working through something like this book http://pragprog.com/book/rails4/agile-web-development-with-rails would probably be a really good way to getting started with rails as you'll have a bunch of people around you to ask questions from etc... if/as you get stuck. Bearing in mind we have no internet, so you'd be advised to have the full rails stack working on your laptop before camp, so work through the first chapter or two before it. If you get stuck, post to this list :-)

It's an un-conference so there will be adhoc presentations discussions etc... and a big room full of people coding away, sometimes on existing projects they have or people grouping up to create something new at the camp.

Abhinav has reminded me where I read that claim: http://trineo.co.nz/blog/2012/02/railscamp-nz-2

Matt, I think you'll get a lot out of it, as long as you follow Nahum's good advice to come prepared to a certain degree.

Thanks everyone for the advice and encouragement. I am pretty familiar with html, css, javascript and have worked through a pretty good chunk of Michael Hartl's tutorial. I guess just gives me more incentive to up my skills during the next two months!

I'm sold!  Looking forward to seeing you all then.
