Hi everyone,

What do you all think about Objects on Rails?

Academic twaddle? Or sensible application of OO design?

I don't know about sensible, but it makes interesting and at times useful reading. I think its pretty applied rather than academic.

If you have a green fields project with a bunch of people who care then yeah, go for it, but how many times does that happen? Avdi said on twitter the other day that if you're using Factory Girl in your tests then you're doing wrong. No shit sherlock. How about you spend a day in my shoes then tell me 'seams' in your 'design'

In the real world it's a refactoring target at best.

Intro sounds interesting and I have been using similar techniques for
a long time but sometimes rails does get in your way.

Lately I have been wishing for a competitor to rails that is similarly
full featured but either less opinionated or asserting a different
opinion.

Thanks Ben, that's very timely. I've been tackling with some of these same issues today. There's definitely a place for a lot more work and discussion in this area. I've just started reading the book now, so I can't judge whether it's academic twaddle yet, but my gut feeling is that this is probably one of the weakest areas in most rails developers toolkit, and if the book is even vaguely any good, it'll be very important

Hi,

We could probably talk about that in the upcoming WellRailed meetup.
What do you think? Maybe you could give a short introduction?

Thorsten

Hi,

Sounds like an interesting topic for the upcoming WellRailed meetup. Do you mind telling us a little bit about "Object on Rails"? Maybe just a short introduction, followed by a discussion.
