I am look at this which basically says you can simply configure your printer from the printer LCD screen by entering the wifi password and boom you're done. This means you don't have to install any drivers which I would like to avoid. However, I'm not sure about the security of giving the printer your wifi password, so I wanted to see if there's a way to install a printer on a Mac using a USB cable, which doesn't require using a software driver/installation. That is, I would imagine there is some printer where you simply plug it into your Mac and it shows up in some settings panel and you can simply open a PDF in Preview and press "Print to X printer", and you would get all of this without having to install drivers or connect through wifi. Or if this is not possible I'd be interested to know why. I'd also be interested to know if connecting to USB is a security risk, but that's a separate question :). Basically, I don't want to connect the printer to the network at all, just directly connect to it via USB. I haven't found anything instruction-wise saying how to do this or if it's technically possible. If it is, I don't see why they're trying to sell you on downloading and using the driver.
First, yes there is a minor security risk by connecting the printer via WiFi. However, that risk exists for every device that is connected, be it your Mac, your TV or your fridge. At least your printer will not attempt to access the internet via the router - your TV or fridge will.
That risk does not exist when using a USB or wired network connection. Both of these also have the advantage that they are a lot more reliable than WiFi. Unlike laptops, printers do not recover gracefully from WiFi dropouts.
Now, as to the need for a driver. As @Mawg pointed out, you always need a driver to print; even a blank page requires a driver. However, in most cases OSX does make your life easier, as it is supplied with drivers for a huge number of printers. Most printers can be installed simply by plugging it in (or setting up the printer's WiFi connection). OSX will "see" the printer and either install the driver, or prompt you to get it. That is probably what happened with your earlier printers. If this does not work with your current printer, please start by telling us the exact model, and someone will check driver availability.
Footnote: some Operating Systems, such as Windows come with a few built in printer drivers for the more popular makes of printer. I don't know about mac, but 1) I am presuming you already tried that & there was not such a built in driver or you would not be asking here, and 2) you would still have a driver. No driver = no talking to the printer.

I don't have this specific printer, but on a new Brother printer I have, you have to disable network/USB interfaces you don't want to use, and enable the one you DO want to use. It's somewhere in the printer settings. Look at your manual or online setup instructions.
Is there any possible way to connect the 743 using an Ethernet cable? My 743 is connected to the Verizon Fios router via an Ethernet cable. The router sees the 743 and all of our computers & phones can print without any problems.
If my memory is correct, after downloading the 743's drivers to my Windows computer, I had to specify how the computer was going to connect to the printer. The options were USB or (network?). USB is a direct connection. Network is shared.
Oh alright already. Joe 1234567, if you're still there......page 18 of the User's Guide, easily found at Canon online, states that either wired LAN or wireless LAN is chosen from the operator panel. The Getting Started Guide shows the options as either Wireless LAN, OR Wired LAN/USB.
I was given the Canon Pixma MX922 printer from a friend and it did not come with the CD to set up wireless printing. When following directions online for setting up without the CD, it says to follow a link, but when I click on it, it the page says it's not found. Has anyone run into this same issue? Any suggestions on what to do or should I just get rid of the printer? Thanks!
You do not need a CD to install the drivers. You wouldn't want to use a years old CD as whatever it might contain would be long out of date. Select your OS and use the latest drivers available for your OS.
Without internet, you will not be able to use any cloud based features like scan to email, but printing and scanning to / from devices on a local network is possible. You can also print or scan to / from a device connected via USB.
The problem is people that don't have internet, or easy access to wifi internet in their home because they live rurally, don't bother having a router set up either, and are often living on minimal power situation as well. So the question should be "Can you print wirelessly directly from a device to the printer without a network and a router?" When I was setting up my Canon 2922, I remember vaguely seeing a question about direct print, so I thought I could find info, now later, but it's harder to find than I thought. Lots of trial and error in setting up a canon printer. When looking for that wireless, good to have the wireless button flashing on the printer before you try installing the printer on the device. You get that button flashing by holding it down. Two flashes is what is required and then you have to act at the device end and if you missed it try again. You will probably miss the first time. Don't sweat it. Try again. Canon is all about try again.
Simply, you don't need to be connected to the Internet outside world.. You DO need a local network set up in your house, with a router. This gives computers and printers network (IP) addresses so they can see and connect to each other.
You can download the software from the Canon website. Search for your printer model and select "Drivers & Software". There will be options to download based upon your OS and such. _multifunction/pixma_mp_series/pixma_mp495#Dr...
I need access to the CNMNPU.EXE utility to troubleshoot my MX922 install issue but I misplaced my CD, which contains the exe. Is there a way to download the files needed from Canon or get a replacement CD?
Thanks but I can't get the cnmnpu.exe utility from that software link. I know it exists on the setup CD-ROM but I don't have access to that and there seems to be no way to get a copy weithout buying a whole new printer. Any chance Canon can provide the utility? I'm stuck without that tool.
