I'm looking to make a few hoops and fire hoops, and was wondering if
anyone else was keen to get together for a making day?

I'm not thinking straight away - more like after Easter.

Anyone keen?

Me!  I know someone else who's keen to make a fire hoop, and to meet other hoopers.  She's away on holiday right now, but I suspect Easter or after would suit her too - I'll check and get back to you.

We meet and spin fire in Frank Kits Park Tuesday nights weather permitting.
Please bring Koha if you wish to use the fuel provided.
This is pegasol and is highly refined kerosene $5 minimum.
If you wish to bring your own fuel, please bring your own dipping bucket so you do not mix down the peg with regular kero.

Great! I know it's a few weeks away... but how about the weekend of
17 April?

Right - time to revive this, I think!

Is anyone keen on a making day either this weekend or next?

I'd like to make some practice hoops and a fire hoop, but haven't
actually made either before.
Does anyone have some spare tubing they want to share (for $), or
should I also arrange a buying mission?

And Wendy - what kind of things would I need for the hoop? I'm
thinking tubing, some kind of bolts or wire, and then a few metres of
kevlar... is that right?

I've copied Angel into this because I know she's keen to build a hoop too.

You need:

At least 3.1415etcetc metres of 3/4inch, 160psi alkathene to make a 1m diameter hoop.  I think mine are actually a bit bigger, ie 38ish inches.  The alkathene can be bought at the farm shop in Porirua, open till lunchtime Saturdays, and comes in rolls of 50m for $90ish.  I'm keen to go in on some with others - one roll makes ~16 hoops.

Joiner - 19mm available at Mitre 10, the kind that is double-ended and sits flush with the tubing is good (obvious which when you see them).

Wire - can be bought at Mitre 10 or $2 shop, I like 14 gauge for the spines and the fine fusewire type stuff for the tying.

Kevlar 5cm is good, and I calculate it on 30cm per spine (you can do four, six or eight spines on a hoop), which will give you some left over.

Tape!  Cos tape makes everything better!

;-)

Awesome - thanks! Now to run around collecting things! I always find
good tape the hardest to hunt down...

I'm keen to go in on some alkathene, I'll probably be making four
hoops (1 fire, 2 practice, and one go to my flatmate so I can use mine
again!).
I'll put in a kevlar order with Home of Poi on Friday, so if anyone
else wants to add to my order to save postage, just email me :)

Next weekend works for me, how about Saturday? (24th)
If the weather's good, we should be able to hijack part of Frank
Kitts?

I'm keen on coming along. Will be making a couple of small hand hoops
for Hoopy. :)

I have 7 joiners (i.e. 5 spares) and a fair amount of tape - red and
purple electrical (plastic) tape and a roll of fluro yellow gaffer
(cloth) tape. The gaffer tape has really good friction.

Cheers,
Urs.

I have a roll of tubing from the farm shop in Porirua ~30m more than I will need and ~16m of lighter weight stuff (might be good for childrens hoops or something). I'm keen to learn how to make a fire hoop.

And just for extra added dorkiness, it's inch alkathene you want, not 3/4.

doh

Also, I have a heap of gaffer tape here which I'll bring along.  Yay for people already having Stuff!  joiners are the hardest, cos sometimes any one Mitre 10 only has about 4..

Next Sat works for me.

Cool - I'm happy to go in with others if there's heaps of us needing
tubing, or sort it out on the day. I'll need about 14m for my four
hoops, I think.

I've been looking at tape (for future hoops), and we seriously need a
NZ supplier! Has anyone used identi-tape before? They look like they
have good prices, but I have no idea how much the shipping would be.

Kathryn- if we can still hold it at your house, that would be great!

I have identi-tape, the tape is good and reasonable prices but shipping is ridiculously expensive (like, $120US expensive).  I got mine by getting it shipped to a friend in the US then having someone bring it when they came over.  Or, you could get a friend to ship it using a less expensive service from the US - identi-tape use expedited international and won't use anything else - hence the expensive shipping.

Thanks Urs - my sister's due to send me over some stuff, so I might
see if I can chuck some tape in that box! :)

So, the making day will be this Saturday, 2pm at Kathryn's (Brooklyn).
I have no idea where that is, but we'll know before Saturday!

Paula - is it okay if Kathryn and I grab some tubing from you? I'm
looking at about three hoops, Kathryn's looking for two I think.

I have kevlar, just need to hit Bunnings for wire and tape, and
hopefully get my hands on some connectors (if anyone's willing to
bring along some extras I'm happy to reimburse) and there will be
oodles of awesome hoops! (and other stuff if other people are making
fun things!)

My house is 88 Todman street, Brooklyn. If you're needing power tools I don't own any - so BYO.

I have ordered kevlar for 2 hoops (4m) which is for Kate and I. Kate is coming when she finishes work.

I am buying enough tubing for 2 hoops from Paula which she says is aproximately $7 per hoop.

I hope it's alright to contribute money to you nicola for joiners and wire? So that's 2 x 6 spoked hoops.

Hey people, if you're making fire hoops, it pays to remember that the
wicks add quite a bit of weight. So it's probably a good idea to start
off with light tubing - preferably 3/4 inch, 100 psi alkythene.

Also, you're going to need to bring wire - at least 2 feet per spike -
so if you're wanting 6 wicks, you'll need at least 12 feet (3.6
metres) of wire.

Plus, you're going to need something to make holes in your tubing for
the wire to go through. So a hand drill or a small electric drill is
ideal.

Hoopy says that regarding wicks, he divided 4.5m of 2" wick between 6
spikes, and as a result his hoop turned out really heavy. So you might
want to think about using a little less wick. Of course, the upside of
that was that his hoop burns for a realy, really long time. :)

See you all this afternoon!

Cheers,
Urs.

Sorry to be contrary Urs, but I found that inch alkathene in the heavier (160psi) worked better because the 3/4 was too floppy.  It's ..ok.. but the heavier and less floppy stuff has worked out easier to use in the long run.  But you're right, it adds quite a bit of weight.  It also pays to make your hoop a couple of inches smaller diameter than you'd normally use because the wicks will drag through the air (physics, argh!), and because you're adding diameter by having the wicks.

The other thing is I've now got my wicks set at about 4-5 inches from the hoop and so far haven't set fire to myself.

Sorry I had to bail on today, and I hope you guys have an awesome time.

I'm just going by what Hoopy has done, and his comments about the
effects of lighter tubing vs heavier wicks.

Also, 4-5 inches sounds about right as a distance from the hoop.
Here's what Hoopy says he did:

fold the wire in half
attach the wick to the folded end
drill a hole in the hoop
put the other end through the hole and bend each wire a dfferent way
tape in place

Not that that's confusing at all. ;)

Cheers,
Urs.
