Dear Weller family,

We owned a brewery once. It's in our blood. Shall we brew again?

Many of us descend from the Wellers of Amersham, who were major brewers in their day. I'm sure most of you know this, but if not, the Wellers moved to Amersham in about 1770 and over five generations built a significant brewing empire. The Amersham brewery served over 140 pubs across Buckinghamshire and the surrounding counties, until it was sold off in 1929.

Some of us, over the years, have toyed with the idea of reviving our brewing roots, and re-introducing some of the old Weller beers.

Does this interest you? If so, please get in touch. We need to get a few of us on-board to build the momentum to make this happen.

You don't have to be in England - we have interest in the USA, New Zealand and Australia.

At its simplest level, we can get a brewery in any country to produce a few cases for us with the Weller label on, for consumption within the family. I've already got the Chiltern Brewery (about 11 miles from the old Weller brewery) ready and willing to label some bottles of what would be a modern take on the old Weller's Entire - a locally produced dark, strong porter made from the best English hops, malt and barley. Who's up for a case of beer with the family name on it?

If there's enough interest, we can even engage them to brew a beer to our own specifications - using the original Weller recipes if we can find them - for us to consume, and sell, at our discretion. A few of us need to do some thinking, and some research, and pool resources to see if we can make a real go of this. Anyone interested? I'm sure between us we've got the skills to make this work!

I look forward to hearing from you, even if it's just to say you'll share a beer with us when it's finished.

Cheers!

Alister

Alister:
You can add Canada to the list of countries in which there is interest in knowing more about what might be involved.
I'm the (elder) brother of the late Rev. Richard Weller who did a lot of work on the history of the Weller family though I'm afraid I  don't share his great enthusiasm and ability for genealogy.

Hi Alister,

I am Julia Weller. I grew up in England (in Beaconsfield, Bucks) but currently live in the US (just outside of Washington, DC). My husband used to make beer as a hobby. So count us in for a case of the Weller's Entire!

Hi All,

Ever wondered where the Weller pubs were, and what happened to them? I have done a Google Map to show you!

I hope you will be able to access it. If you can, and spot any mistakes or want to add anything, please let me know!

Regards,

Philip Weller

And fabulous it is too :-)

Perhaps some of those pubs would like to serve Weller beer once again?

I have been collecting old and new pictures of the pubs. Perhaps we could add them to your map?

Mal.

I'm in. I live in the White Mountains of NH.

I am the 6th G.Grandson of William.

William 1727 Brewer, Amersham
William 1764
William 1797
Charles 1849
William 1881
My Grandmother, Alison AKA "Tootsie" 1903
My mom Joan 1933
Myself. 1964

I have talked with head brewer at Shilling Brewery in Littleton, NH and they are interested in reproducing the Weller Ale.

This brewery is located on the banks of the Ammonusuc River in what has repeatedly been rated one of the top 10 little towns in the U.S.

It is a tourist mecca, surrounded by no less than a dozen large ski areas...and caters to outdoor enthusiasts- as well as family adventures. Fall foliage, and antiquing...The town expands from a sleepy 4,000 in winter to 25,000 in summer, and caters to thousands more...

Schilling just built a new $5,000,000 brewery that sits adjacent to their renovated 1810 building, complete with restaurant, stone fired hearth pizza, 1800s 15 foot waterwheel for stone ground wheat, and 200 foot long covered bridge...

Next step, gentlemen....

I have been looking for what happened to Benskin's Brewery who bought the WELLER brewery.
Benskin's Brewery was taken over by Ind Coope in 1957. http://www.quaffale.org.uk/php/brewery/730
The Co. then became Carlsberg-Tetley. http://www.quaffale.org.uk/php/brewery/706
which is now Carlsberg UK Ltd. A starting point!

We searched for the yeast many years back. There is a yeast museum (or some such) would you believe! Sadly they did not have the WELLER brewery yeast in their archive :-(

There is some info on Weller's Entire, a type of Porter.
https://amershammuseum.org/history/trades-industries/amersham-brewery/
https://amershammuseum.org/history/people/17th-18th-centuries/the-weller-family/
No recipe though!

Mal.
