Hi Carolyn,

Thanks for your message.
I remember getting a message from your brother Gordon. There are other WELLERs from Jamaica on our news group but at the time no one had any further information. I have posted this message to the group in case someone has found out more since.

We know that some of our family went to Jamaica because Henry Weller; http://www.weller.org.uk/cgi-bin/FamilyTree/ShowFamily.pl?PersonID=111
is reported to be buried at Black River in 1815.
His father was William Weller 1764-1843 but he is probably too old to be your great grandfather.
Do you know any more detail about your great grandfather (DOB, DOD, where he was born and died, where he lived)?

I grew up in North London but now live in West London.
Cheers,
Malcolm Weller.

Hi Malcolm

I saw the Weller family tree website and was facinated by it.  I am from the Jamaican branch and wondered if you knew which William Weller
went to Jamaica - there seem to be lots of William Wellers.  My grandfather was William Weller, born in Jamaica and my great grandfather
was also William Weller.  I think maybe his father was the first Weller to go to Jamaica.  Do you have any knowledge of any of this?

I live in North London and would be very happy to hear from you.  I think maybe my brother has been in touch with you previously,  his name is
Gordon Weller.

Many thanks
Carolyn Weller

Hi Carolyn,

You mention your grandfather and great-grandfather, both William
WELLER. Do you have dates of birth - or at least ages at death? As
Malcolm has mentioned, our relative Henry WELLER was buried at Black
River, Jamaica in 1815. There is no evidence that Henry's younger
brother William - my own great-grandfather - ever lived or even
visited the island.

So, could your ancestor William possibly have been a son of Henry? No
record of his marriage has been found, but he may have had children.
Also, as you doubtless are aware, slaves were often given the surname
of their 'owner' if they didn't have an African surname. DNA testing
(from your brother or other male relative) would establish whether
there is a genetic link to the WELLERs of Ox & Bucks. I think there
is a previous topic on this forum about the WELLER DNA study.

In any case, I too would be glad to have the information Mal has
requested, as I am now custodian of the WELLER One-Name Study.
Briefly, that means that I collect and file any data about WELLERs
worldwide, and try to help anyone researching the name.

Besides your brother Gordon, Dr Peter Douglas & Louise Weller
(Jamaica,) Rosalee May Karefa-Smart (cs email code), Peter Weller
(Kingston,) Helen Weller (UK,) and Roland Weller (Aruba) have been in
contact concerning WELLERs in the West Indies.

All good wishes,

Richard
