Dear Mr Weller,

You must be rather weary of the Dickens connection, but please do help
me! I am a historian, not a genealogist, and I sat up with interest
when I discovered that a husband and wife by the name of Daniel & Mary
Weller, both 45 in the 1841 census, and their children Francis, Emma,
Daniel, William and Henry all lived diagonally opposite a house in
which Charles Dickens' family had lived, between 1815-1816, and again
1828-32, in Norfolk Street, London. Do they have any connection with
your branch of the family? If not, do you know any other Wellers who
might be able to help me understand their history?

Thank-you kindly for any help you are able to give!

Best wishes,

Dr Ruth Richardson, historian.

This letter was originally addressed to Malcolm Weller who, like me,
descends from the Ox & Bucks WELLERs, but I think Daniel is more
likely to be a scion of the Kent & Sussex family. Can anyone identify
him?

Richard/ Ruth,
Historyscape site has Weller Daniel christened 1788 at St Mildred, Tenterden
Kent. May be worth investigating.

Thanks Jacqui. I note that Historyscape has that Daniel's wife as
Harriet and children Stephen, Jane and Edward, baptised 1823-1828 in
Tenterden, so probably a different man (unless he had another wife and
family in London, which would not be a unique situation!)

It appears from the 1851 census that this Daniel Weller (then aged 57
- HO 107/1500 f.269 p.27 indexed on Ancestry as John Weller) was born
in Brighton and www.familysearch.org suggests that he was the son of
Richard and Mary Weller, baptised at the Countess of Huntingdon's
Chapel in North Street on 14 Feb 1794.

Many thanks, Ruth.

You have beaten me to it! I was also deducing that that Daniel might
be the one who later lived near Charles Dickens and I came online to
post a message to that effect, only to find you had already done so.

Many thanks. I will pass on your finding to Ruth Richardson.

Hello Monica,

John Wells has emailed, and when I looked up his WELLER interest I found that you and I had already been in contact in 2008.  Please forgive my absent-mindedness.  I now realise that you are a descendant of James Crescent SHAW and Betsy WELLER.  I am sorry to say that I have not managed to trace Betsy’s grandfather Thomas (ca 1737-1807) any further back.than his second marriage, to Lucy HIDER in Heathfield.

There could be a connection to the WELLER family who lived near Charles DICKENS because that family descended from the WELLERs of Horsham, Sussex, which is not very far from Heathfield, where your WELLER ancestors lived. I will let you know if I find anything to help you.

I will also post a message on the ‘Weller of Kent’ Google group forum.

All good wishes,

Richard

Dear Richard, please don't worry about it!!!  I had to ask John to help you since I haven't been in my tree for so long....and John still is so much into all of this, I remembered what you said about the Weelers, but just in case I missed something.  But anyway, sorry we couln't help much on this, but if you need anything else, please just e-mail me.

Have a good night!

Monica
