Is anyone else researching the WELLER surname in these areas in the
mid 1700s? I am descended from Elizabeth WELLER who married John HILLS
in Tunstall in 1797, producing three children (John, Horton and
Elizabeth) before moving into Chatham. Elizabeth died in Chatham in
1835.

I believe Elizabeth may have been the daughter of Thomas Weller and
Sarah Olive/r and was bp in Tunstall in 1780.

If anyone else has Weller interests in this area I am happy to share
the Weller names I have extracted from the Tunstall parish registers.

Hi,

I have recently started researching my Weller line.  I am also a descendant of Thomas Weller and Sarah Olive through their son Charles.
I would greatly appreciate any information that you  are willing to share to help fill in the family tree.

Sincerly,

Kim

Kim, Welcome to the group.

You may already have the marriage of your ancestors Thomas and Sarah:
Archbishop of Canterbury Marriage Allegations:
4 Jul 1761.  Thos WELLER of Tunstall, bach[elor], and Sarah OLIVE of s[ame parish] sp[inster], at Tunstall.

There is no baptism record of a Thomas WELLER  in Tunstall in the relevant timeframe, but a possible candidate is a Thomas, son of Thomas and Elizabeth WALLER, bapt 15 Jan 1731/32 in neighbouring Milton-next-Sittingbourne [Source IGI]  There are several WELLERs, children of Thomas and Sarah in the years following, so the 1731/32 Thomas may be son of the same parents.

There is a marriage at Milton after banns on 24 Oct 1725 of Thomas WALLER and Elizabeth HEARNDON.  Also a burial there on 22 Oct 1745 of Elizabeth, wife of Thomas WELLER.  There is no record of the burial of an Elizabeth WELLER in Tunstall in the relevant period, so she may be the one who married in 1725.  There was a burial in Tunstall of a Thomas WELLER 30 Jul 1806. [BTs.]

Corroborating evidence is necessary before it can be accepted that these refer to the same Thomas and Elizabeth who are your ancestors.

Yes, welcome Kim... I think you and I are connected via Thomas, you from his first marriage to Sarah Olive and me by his second marriage to Mary Hall.

I only have three sons born to Thomas and Sarah, these being William in 1762, Thomas in 1765, and James in 1767, all christened in Tunstall. As a subsequent child of the second marriage was also called James I suspect this earlier one died as a baby. William born 1762 also died as a baby in Tunstall in 1765.

Are you able to provide some details on where your Charles was christened or an approximate birth year for him?

Robyn

Correction to my last post relating to the previous generation in Milton-next-Sittingbourne.  The relevant baptisms according to IGI/FamilySearch ref 104803-3 are:

11 Sep 1726 Mary d/o Thos and Eliz WALLER
28 Jun 1728  William s/o Thos and Eliz WALLER
30 Jan 1732  Thomas s/o Thos and Eliz WALLER
15 Feb 1736  William s/o Thomas and Elizabeth WELLER

There is a burial in 1736 of William s/o Thomas WALLER.

There are no other WALLER or WELLER baptisms in this period or to the end of the century, so it is possible the children are of the same parents, whose surname has been recorded or transcribed differently.  (I had erroneously given the mother - Elizabeth nee HEARNDEN - the name Sarah in my previous post.)

I know you have searched a film of the actual registers Robyn, so I hope the above agrees with your list.

Richard
