Dear Students,
The Tax Clinic Program
The 2009 Free Income Tax Clinic Program is running from Monday, March
23rd to Friday, April 3rd and is open to all currently attending
George Brown College Students.
As part of Canada Revenue Agency’s Community Volunteer Income Tax
Program (CVITP), the clinic offers free income tax return preparation
and filing services.
The deadline to file your individual tax return is April 30. If you
need assistance in completing your tax return, please visit the clinic
in your campus Lifeworks Centre. Student volunteers who have received
training from Canada Revenue are available by appointment to assist
students in completing their return.
To qualify for this service, you must:
- be a GBC student
- have a yearly income of:
- $25,000 or below (single)
- $30,000 or below (couple)
- $30,000 or below (single w/child)
- $2,000 or below (additional for each child)
- $1,000 or less in interest income
The clinic does not offer tax preparation for individuals with self-
employed/business income, rental income/expenses and capital gains/
losses. The clinic also does complete returns for individuals
requiring out-of-province returns or previous year’s returns. However,
volunteers will be able to direct you to obtaining the appropriate
forms.
Volunteers will be using a tax preparation software program, UFILE, to
complete all returns. E-filing (direct electronic filing to the
government) is also available to eligible returns.
To make an appointment to get your tax returns prepared between March
23rd to April 3rd, please go to:
Room 165B, St. James Lifeworks Centre
(416.415.5000 x2845,
saclli...@georgebrown.ca)
Room E130, Casa Loma Lifeworks Centre
(416.415.5000 x6314,
sasjli...@georgebrown.ca)
Another option if you wish to do your own taxes but don’t want to pay
the fees, you may use the tax preparation program, UFILE, available
online. The Canadian Federation of Students and UFile.ca, Canada's
online tax preparation website, have joined together to provide FREE
online tax preparation and filing for all Canadian post-secondary
students. As a full-time student and a member of CFS, go to
http://www.ufile.ca/home/cfs.asp .
Remember, the deadline to file is APRIL 30. For more information on
income tax filing, please visit the office or read CRA’s General
Income Tax and Benefit Guide –2008 (
