1. News Article: Cancer Costs Projected to reach at Least $158 billion in 2020

By 2020, the annual cost of cancer care in the United States is expected to reach at least $158 billion -- a 27 percent jump from 2010, according to a report from the U.S. National Cancer Institute.

The projections were based on the most recent data available on cancer incidence, survival, and costs of care. In 2010, medical costs associated with cancer were projected to reach $127.6 billion, with the highest costs associated with breast cancer ($16.5 billion), followed by colorectal cancer ($14 billion), lymphoma ($12 billion), lung cancer ($12 billion) and prostate cancer ($12 billion).

"Rising health care costs pose a challenge for policy makers charged with allocating future resources on cancer research, treatment, and prevention," said study author Angela Mariotto, Ph.D., from NCI's Surveillance Research Program. "Because it is difficult to anticipate future developments of cancer control technologies and their impact on the burden of cancer, we evaluated a variety of possible scenarios."

To develop their cost projections, the authors used average medical costs for the different phases of cancer care: the first year after diagnosis, the last year of life, and the time in between. For all types of cancer, per-person costs of care were highest in the final year of life. Per-person costs associated with the first year after a cancer diagnosis were more varied, with cancers of the brain, pancreas, ovaries, esophagus and stomach having the highest initial costs and melanoma, prostate and breast cancers having the lowest initial-year costs.

2.  News Article: New to Sam’s Club, $99 Basic Health Services

Beginning this month, Sam's Club shoppers stocking up on milk, detergent and toilet paper, can now also throw a basic health service package into their shopping cart. The package which will cost $99 is called "The Prevention Plan" and is offered by U.S. Preventive Medicine.  “The plan isn't health insurance,” said Christopher Fey, CEO of U.S. Preventive Medicine. It's more of a personalized health program that gives buyers access to the basic tools they need to evaluate their health. It also coaches them on how to attain a healthier lifestyle.

You do not have access to a doctor, but access to a nurse line that is available 24 hours, seven days a week.  An internet based program gives you among other things the ability to do an at-home blood screening test that will help monitor your cholesterol, blood sugar and hemoglobin levels. Once the blood work has been received and analyzed, the results are then examined by a physician at which point that data is taken and used to put together a plan for the patient that is just for them and alerts them to any risks they might be facing and what they should do to try and improve any health issues.

Kathleen Stoll, director of health policy with consumer advocacy group Families USA, strongly recommends that the prevention plan not be thought of as a replacement for access to a doctor or a community health center.  It is preventive maintenance for those seeking to be proactive about their health that may not have the money to see a physician.

4.  The Science of Research on Discrimination and Health

Racial/ethnic discrimination is often identified as a contributor to racial/ethnic disparities in health but rarely examined in this context. The specific purposes of the meeting are to (1) promote the science/research on racial/ethnic discrimination and its contribution to racial/ethnic disparities in health; (2) identify gaps in the research literature and areas for future research and/or NCI/NIH funding initiatives; and (3) increase awareness of the NCI’s interest in funding research in this topic area through the Program Announcement, The Effect of Racial and Ethnic Discrimination/Bias on Health Care Delivery.
