Note: Your Chromebook supports third-party file systems that use DocumentsProvider APIs. If you download one of these Android files apps from the Play Store, it will appear on the left-hand side of your Files .

By default, your files are saved to your Downloads folder, a temporary folder on your Chromebook's hard drive. You can change where downloads are saved by default or select a specific folder for each download.

3) Login to the account you want to share with either by adding the account to your chromebook or opening an Incognito window and logging in there. Go to the Shared with Me part of the Google Drive site

Then navigate to the Files app and right cick (two finger tap) on a file and select more options and then you'll see a save to drive option, where you can save to as many different google accounts as you like.

I reformatted the drive to both FAT32 and NFTS and tried connecting to my computer then with no luck. According to google, ChromeOS is compatible with both FAT32 and NFTS.

When I opened my files, I noticed that there was a folder titled 'Recovered Files from Google Drive' (I use an Acer Chromebook). It had the files (the .mp3 files and the Album Art) but it also had these .com files. They were all renamed though. the mp3 files were called 'audio' followed by some numbers, image followed by numbers, then there were the com files that were titled file------.

It is created when something goes wrong in a google drive sync. You do not have to worry about it if you did not lose any real data. From what I've gotten from looking it up, there is nothing wrong on your side, any problem would be with Google's side, you should be able to delete the folder.

can syncthing be used to sync a downloads folder local drive on chromeOS chromebook to local usb drive on chromebook for backup, chromebook has syncthing android app installed ive got as far as a syncthing android data folder on the usb drive but im wondering has this or can this be done, didnt see much in the faq/help docs, any help appreciated, using a dell chromebook 7310 with chromeOS and android supported, any help appreciated

Syncthing is not meant for local sync. But can be used as such, if you install 2 instances. If you cannot install the normal binary and need to use the Android App, you will have to install the official version and the fork to sync a local folder to a local folder.

While there are several similarities between Chromebooks and other laptops, there are also a few key differences. When deciding what you want to buy, you'll want to take these differences into consideration.

Chromebooks are cloud-based, which means instead of storing programs and applications on an internal hard drive like most laptops, a majority of its apps run from the cloud. This often makes Chromebooks very lightweight because they don't need as much processing power and memory.

However, if you don't have a reliable Internet connection at home, a Chromebook may not be the best choice. While many of the apps on Chromebooks are able to be used offline, you'll want to be connected to the Internet to get the most out of your Chromebook.

Because they're mostly cloud-based, Chromebooks have less local storage than most other laptops, usually between 16GB and 32GB of space. This means you should be fairly familiar with how to use the cloud if you plan on buying a Chromebook.

Instead of running Windows, Chromebooks use Chrome OS. This means you can't install traditional Windows programs on them, only what's available in Google Play, which includes Android apps. Because Chrome OS is primarily based off of the Chrome browser, many of the apps that you select are really just bookmarks that take you to websites (for example, the Google Docs app takes you to docs.google.com).

Chromebooks do not have a built-in CD or DVD drive. You can still play media from a USB drive or from saved files, but if you're looking for a computer to play your CDs and DVDs, a Chromebook may not be for you.

I got a chromebook last week with the aim of using it on the move while learning Rust so I messed around with dev mode and booting galliumos and using crouton chroots but neither were really to my liking so until (if my chromebook does get it. Acer R11 CB5-132T-C1LK) crostini comes out I thought i'd give chromebrew a go and after a bit of fiddling because I have an irrational fear of wearing out soldered in emmc I managed to get rust working and thought it might be of interest to others.

after a bit rustup will have completed and everything is installed but if you run cargo you'll get permission denied as the usb drive is probably mounted noexec so you'll need to remount as exec (and probably a good idea to add this to your .bashrc too

Hi all, I'm trying to create a pinned shelf app for all my users to point to a specific spreadsheet on the google drive. I've gone to Devices > Chrome > Apps and extensions and added a web app with force install and a custom icon and name. However when I put in the share link for the file this doesn't seem to work, the shortcut just opens the google sheets homepage. Any ideas? I've tried creating the share link within Drive and also within the file itself when opened on google sheets.

Moving all my files was easy. I already had Google Drive for PC installed. (It syncs Google Drive with your local file system. So you have a local copy of everything.) All I had to do was copy all my folders across to my Google Drive folder, and wait a few days for everything to upload. It went off without a hitch and was surprisingly fast.

So I knew that, by its very nature, it would definitely give me the freedom I was after (all editing is done in the web app, on any computer, no expensive resource-hungry software install required). And the Google Docs Android app is pretty good.

Most clients have Word. But not all have a recent version. So when they open my file, their version of Word quite often screws up the formatting. Indeed, this sometimes happens even when they have the same version as me (2010).

When I send copy drafts to my clients, I tell them they can call or email me with their changes, or simply edit the copy directly and add comments. Most choose the latter. So a good track changes system is a must.

And if I absolutely need to get away from the kids, I can go to a cafe. Or if I absolutely need to do something on the PC (like video editing, or some hard-core multi-tasking for which multiple displays are awesome), I can always wander back down into the office.

You can dual screen from the hdmi port on your chromebook - plug in an hdmi monitor and it just happens, which is so good. If I recall you can do the same with a TV and close the lid on the chromebook and it will continue to stream to the tv. I have the Toshiba CB2 for loungeroom/travel and an Asus Chromebox with dual screens in my office. Bliss!

Thanks Terry. When you dual screen with the HDMI, does it function as an extended desktop, or just a mirror of your chromebook screen? And if you plug into a TV is there a slight delay? I remember I used a TV with my desktop once, and it was shocking.

Try HelloSign, it's really intuitive and it just works! You can even upload a signature from your phone! Nice! And for the other stuff you've mentioned that does not work, try searching apps or extensions from the Web Store first.

Wow! Good to know Chrome OS and Chromebooks work well for you. I am using a Chromebook as my main drive now (only using the Windows 10 PC for Photography work) and I am also loving it for the same reasons you listed. This is a great post.

Hi Ruben. I tested HelloSign as a way to enable my clients to sign my proposal documents, but it was all too clunky. Gave up on it. I haven't tried it for signing, myself. I have, however, used the Kami plugin, and I suspect that'll work for me. If it doesn't, I'll give HelloSign another look.Which other things do you think there are apps/extensions for? Would love to find some. :-)Cheers.

Hi James. Thanks for your comment. Dropbox is slightly more sophisticated than Google Drive at syncing (particularly its de-duplication features), but I had issues with files being inexplicably deleted when we trialled Dropbox for Business. That really scared me.But there's more to it than that. Dropbox doesn't have its own editors (like Google Docs) or its own hardware (like the Chromebook). It's really just a standalone tool. To use it, I'd still need to use Microsoft Office and local files, which is exactly what I wanted to get away from...Hope this answers your question.Cheers.Glenn

They do make versions of this Chromebook that have M.2 drives in them. But they also make versions that have it soldered to the board. The easiest way to find out which one you have is to take it apart. See this video about replacing the M.2 if you have one: =9WVFoDBI...

A Chromebook supports different external storage devices including hard drives, USB flash memory, and micro SD cards. These external storage devices can be used to expand the small storage space on a Chromebook and transfer files between a Chromebook and other devices including Mac and Windows computers. The Chrome operating system supports file systems like FAT32, FAT16, exFAT, and NTFS. It can also read the Mac HFS+ file system but cannot write on it. Chromebook can read ISO9660 and UDF files on disc and also support MTP protocol for external disc drives that connect to USB, digital cameras, and music players. When you connect an external device to a Chromebook for the first time, it will automatically format that drive to exFAT. You can format your storage device to exFAT or let Chromebook do it automatically for you.
