Dear Wisdom seekers,

Just wanted to share with you that I had the opportunity to visit the famous Kyaikhtiyo pagoda in Myanmar when I was in Myanmar for a visit.

I had a wonderful time there.

The pagoda is in Mon state and you can go there by bus or by rental cars.
The private van that we rented cost us about Kyats 120,000. This included petrol and one driver.

We drove right up to a base camp called Kinmon Sakhan and from there changed into another vehicle, this time a truck that was able to climb up the steep slopes of the mountain with numerous hairpin bends. We arrived at Yathetaung and from there had to climb on foot. It was a very pleasant climb from there. You also have the option of going up on a sort of makeshift carrier. Four porters carried the passenger.

It was a treat to look at all the goods being sold on the way up to the pagoda platform. On both sides of the pathway leading up to the pagoda platform there were stalls sellings various kinds of goods from herbal medicines to momentos and Buddha images, statuettes, brass gongs, brass bells and photos of the Kyaikhtiyo pagoda in various sizes. There were also food stalls selling all kinds of Burmese food from snacks made of rice and coconut shavings to sweets made of jaggery ( a kind of brown sugar derived from toddy palms that grow in upper Myanmar). My favourite of course was the ever popular "mohinga" - a delicious meal made of rice vermicelli and fish soup with a rich and nice smell of fish sauce, lemon grass, chilli, garlic, onions and tumeric. This of course is also the favourite meal for anytime during the day but most popular in Burmese bazaars as a breakfast meal.

(to be continuted)

Dear Tom,

Here are the recommended places:
  1. Popa
  2. Mandalay
  3. Yangon
In Yangon, you should go and see my teacher.  I will send email to you separately.

You should climb the Mount Popa and spend one or two nights there. There you can do Adeikhtans - these are sacred vows using the meditation beads.

Regards,

Kyaw
