Death sentences are cowardly ways of dealing with people who have
problems by simply getting rid of them so that nobody has to think
about them or their problems. It is a barbaric and primitive way of
dealing with crime.
Governments should never have the power to kill citizens for any
reason, because the power is always abused, and it doesn't address the
issue of the cause of the problem.
Even in cases where an indiaivual is mentally ill or has mental
retardation, proponents of death sentences have no compassion for
people who trully have little control over themselves. It simply is not
compassionate to kill someone who doesn't understand why they did what
they did. IN a famous case, GW Bush executed a black retarded man whose
last words prior to being executed were "Can I have some ice cream when
we're done?"
The worst thing about the death sentence is that rich white people
almost never get executed compared to poor black people who commit the
same crimes. Death sentences unfairly target poor and non-white.
Let's say, I had grown up in an enviroment obviously unsuitable
for any child, this plays into my development as a member of society
and how I will interact with others. I have grown with a particularly
reckless attitude, having dismissed all sense of consequence and
remorse. For the hell of it, I've decided to kill a Mother of two
children, the Father going through who knows what with my actions to
press him over.
As I am tryed, I obviously am showing no sense of guilt, with little
to no interest or notice to the remaining Families reaction to my
crime. I am the type of person who could kill on the dime, or commit to
equally brutal crimes on the spot. I show no mercy, and have had a
history commiting to violent crimes, though usually of lesser offense.
How do you change a person like this? Better yet, how can you
justify a life sentence as a suitable punishment for someone who
clearly has the patience for it? Who will be so off as to even think of
it as a victory in living out the rest of his days in a setting no less
or more poor than what he was living in, perhaps?..Better more so, with
all of the treatment and care that will be invested in him.
Including meals, medical treatment, etc, etc.
Right -- because you simply don't know any better. Punishment for you
makes no sense because you obviously cannot "reflect" on anything.

And executing you would help your victims in precisely what way?

LOTS and LOTS of therapy. Perhaps a lifetime of therapy. Not being a
psychology expert, I couldn't really tell you how to help a fictional
case.

What patience? I would say that people who "kill on a dime" have no
patience. Besides, prison should not be about punishment. It should be
about re-education, training, therapy, healing. Murderers typically
have serious problems, and helping them work through them is better
than simply wiping them out like human waste.

And execution helkps the victims precisely how?
Dave, I can understand that an alternative which aims to stray from
the most basic wrong of human nature as a form of punishment or lesson
is appealing, death is death and motive to it is outweighted by the
loss of life, whether it be to punish or to be the victim of.
But I don't see how some people can be changed at all..and I've only
given the example of a young man who has obviously had a troubled early
childhood for grounds as a negative mental development. But what of
people who will do it out of the blue? Kist to "see" what would happen?
Dave, I can't understand how that would work, I'm always open to a
change of view on a lot of issues, but this is just something that's
still a little too far out there for me to reach.
