Ijust face the black screen for the first time. It happened to me after applying the latest Parallels Service Pack. The installation went fine and when my Windows started afterwards it automatically started the installation of Parallels Tools. The installation of Parallels Tools crashed at about 35 %. Afterwards I had the black screen. Rebooting solved the issue, but only until the Parallels Tools installation started again. Then, after 35 % the installation crashed and I had the black screen.

When a Parallels Virtual Machine is left unattended for a long period of time, it is common for it to get stuck on a black screen, where closing the application, restarting, and reopening will not fix the issue. When Parallels opens back up it only gives the option to resume the machine that is "Suspended" but not actually shut down. To fix this issue, do the following:
At this point you should be able to start up the Virtual Machine again like normal. It is common however for the Virtual Machine to then have an issue shutting down, where it continuously restarts. If you run into this issue, follow the instructions HERE.
I can install Ubuntu 13.10 in parallels ok and then log in. Problem is Ubuntu does an update and I get black screen / desktop such that I can't see any app windows that I open. I've tried a few of the other suggestions and they don't work for me.
Same problem here with a MacBook Pro. Here's what worked for me after I updated 13.10 and received a black screen, although the toolbar on the left was showing. It was simple, but I don't know why it worked.
This just happened to me, with Mavericks, Parallels 9.0.24172, Ubuntu 13.10 and updates installed on 1 Mar 2014. On reboot, I could see the login screen, then after logging in, I could see the Unity "Launcher" or whatever the call the row of icons on the left, but the rest of the screen was black. If I click to start any apps, like Firefox, the icon in the bottom of the Parallels screen indicate that the re is disk activity as the app starts, but the screen remains black.
Just before I installed the Ubuntu updates, Parallels Tools had reinstalled itself, due to a new version of the Tools since I last used the VM, but it seems that certain kinds of Linux updates break the video driver. As stated above, always make a Parallels snapshot before running Ubuntu update, just to be safe.
Shut down the Ubuntu VM (13.10)In Parallels 9 config for the VM, go to Hardware > Video, and disable 3D acceleration.Restart Ubuntu 13.10. You will now get a completely black screen.Shut down the Ubuntu VM once more.Again, in Parallels config for the VM, go to Hardware > Video and reenable 3D acceleration.Restart, and you're back in business (No black screen and everything properly updated).
@FreshStart I use 10.8/Windows 7 and personally I found that Parallels 10 was worse with the graphics in Rhino than Parallels 9. I upgraded to 10.10 to see if Parallels 10 was better for me with that but no real joy.
On my MacBook Pro I get the Rhino black screen if I change my display setup while Rhino is running. Unplug my external monitor or change my mirroring/screen sharing setup and I get the black screen. Only way to get it back is to restart Rhino.
Brian is right on the money here.
I did NOT intend to give VMWare a ringing, positive endorsement.
My experience is VMWare is NOT AS BAD as Parallels for Rhino.
The bottom line is virtualization is not supported.
@BrianJ @John_Brock I think most of us using Rhino in emulation that have been around for a while understand that it is not supported. McNeel does`t mind if we discuss emulation here if we accept that do they?
So after years of abstinence I came back to crossfire. I tried to install it on a Win11 in a parallels environment (19) on an apple m1 (I know, why game on this...).
Install went fine. Went with the default options apart from Juni ;-).
Launcher starts and updates itself.
Then I start to launch the SP campaign (also with default). I offers an update and I accept (round about 1050 Files requested as update). After that it starts, shows "Crossfire is running", the launcher music stops and for a second a black screen opens. I saw that I wasn't the first with this problem but found no solution. I saw that I wasn't the first with this problem but found no solution.
I then continued to try most of the shader options and start it. Strangely Every time I tried tot start it, a new update (smaller, 57 files) was available, but I got the same result, no matter the shader options. Also tried different combinations of windowed mode, screen resolution (and fit to resolution). Same symptoms every time.
and there are some dxdiag (attached) logs referenced.
So maybe even though Parallels on an ARM CPU with an ARM Windows that emulates x86 ... maybe someone could help me. I would really love to dive into crossfire. Started with the HD mod (which worked) and while playing the 8th mission ... yeah well.
Thanks anyway for creating such a great mod and continuing to develop it!
I am having trouble with the iOS simulator and I was wondering if anyone else had the same problem or had any suggestions. I am very new to Xamarin; I just completed the Hello, World tutorial for iOS. I was able to build all with no errors. When I attempt to launch the app in the simulator, it displays a black screen.
I'm using an iMac running Parallels with Windows 10 and Visual Studio Enterprise 2017. I created a new Mobile App (Xamarin.Forms) project under Cross-Platform. Using the latest XCODE (v 12.0) in iMac to get the simulators.
Bump! Have the same problem as well on my M1 iMac 8gb. All PC games running Unreal Engine 4, and possibly other versions, have a black screen or otherwise missing visuals. Other engines appear to run without such issues. Tried different settings and OS bottles, but all get that blackness ...
In the case of Octopath Traveler (and several other games), the black screen is due to a lack of geometry shader support. Metal (Apple's graphics API) does not support geometry shaders, which makes it nearly impossible for us to support in CrossOver Mac. Not all games that present with a black screen or otherwise missing graphics are due to missing geometry shaders, but it is the root cause for many games.
The game is Glitch Arena which is free on Steam. Although I develop on windows I'm primarily Mac and would love for the game to run on mac. I am not the most technical of developers, in fact Glitch is a blueprints only project.
I tried out Glitch Arena, and I was able to confirm by looking a log that the game is indeed using geometry shaders :/ That being said, I'm not sure what workaround there are on the game development side to be able to work around this issue.
Is this not something that can be hammered out using compute shaders? Similar to how Apple currently implements raytracing? Let me guess, even if it were possible, it would be prohibitively slow to do it that way.
F.I.S.T. - Formed In Shadow Torch - demo - UE4 - Missing most textures and objects as early as the menu. Functional but horribly slow under Parallels, even as early as the menu background which is rendering only a single character in high detail and close up.
I have the same problem with Deep Rock Galactic. It runs fine, but only some assets are visible and the rest is black textures, which makes it unplayable unfortunately. Would be great to know which part actually causes this, is this and if its a harder or easier fix. Is this related to dxvk, so manually updating the release would help?
Hi Meredith,
thanks for the explanation! Does that mean that Molten also cannot do anything about it, as it is just a layer on top of Metal and we would basically have to wait until Metal supports Geometry Shaders?

One game that has this issue too is Prey (2017). The game will launch just fine but has all black textures. If the game is launched under a windows VM in Parallels, the textures are all visible. Since Parallels also has to convert DirectX to Metal, do we know how it's accomplishing this?
Some fascinating developments. Few days ago nastys on his GitHub fork of MoltenVK (not going to link it here in case that'll violate any forum rules) has released a patched version of MoltenVK specifically to demonstrate Unreal Engine 4 games working.
