Hello - I'm completely new to all this posting stuff so I hope I'm
doing it correctly! I am an Academic Librarian working in the UK. I'm
about to write my Masters Dissertation and am planning to look at
various shemes for the classification of Jewish collections. I have no
experience of this so you may wonder why I am following this path! I
work in a site library in Birmingham, England and we have a large
collection of Arabic and Islamic material. We use Dewey here and its
increasingly difficult to cram a whole body of knowledge into a very
small section. Originally, I planned to base my dissertation around
this but after researching the subject I became aware that Judaism
suffers the same 'problem' and became very interested in the Salazar
scheme and would like to find out more about the Weine system. I
wondered if anyone knows of a Library in the UK using the Weine system
at the moment. I have found Libraries using the Salazar scheme and
variations of Library Congress but have yet to find the Weine scheme.
Can anyone help? Many thanks. Julie.

I am sorry to say that I do not know any libraries in the UK that use
the Weine system. I am somewhat confused by your post. If you want to
physically visit a library that is using Weine I can't help. But if
you want to see the Weine system, you can join the Assoication of
Jewish Libraries which is an international organization and once you
are a member, you can download the Weine system free of charge from
the AJL website www.jewishlibraries.org . As a non-member I think you
can still purchase the system. Purchase information is on the
website. If you just want to look at a catalog that is using Weine
online there is a list of those on the website also. Feel free to
visit my library's catalog by going to www.jewishlibrariesdetroit.org
and following the link to Congregation B'nai Moshe Library. Hope this
helps you. And by the way let me mention that I think you mean the
Elazar system not the Salazar system named for its creator Daniel
Elazar which is the other major classification system used in Jewish
libraries (tho there are a few others out there).

Sherry - Thanks so much for your reply. I'm so sorry, I do mean
Elazar. No wonder I couldn't find anything when I did a google search
yesterday! I will indeed look at your library catalogue. Thank you for
the link. I am just about to write my research proposal so any
information on the other schemes would be appreciated. Where would be
the best place to find information on other schemes. Information on
Jewish Library collections seem to be very well hidden in the UK!

Many thanks again. Julie.

Julie,
I am attaching a copy of a presentation I gave at the AJL convention in 2006
that deals with cataloging and classification. The section on
classification may be helpful to you. It compares the Weine & Elazar
systems to Dewey and LC and identifies two other Judaic systems that exist.
To find out about them you will have to Google them and hope something comes
up, or contact the institutions that use them and ask. This is a brief, not
detailed introduction to things. Hope it helps. I again recommend posting
a query directly on the Hasafran list of AJL to locate librarians who may
use these systems. Daniel Elazar is a member of AJL and I understand he
answers email queries about his system. He has a website. Sherry
