I am venturing forth into getting a new Pi5 with Trixie set up to
install a fresh, experimental, version of WeeWx5.

Some time ago it was recommended that the virtual environment should be
used.

I found a note from Tom from Oct 31, 2022 on some steps to make sure all
the necessary parts were in place before starting this install.

This was the only set of instructions I found that was step by step,
which I definitely need to follow carefully.

Question:

Is that still the best way to get the virtual environment installed or
are there updates which make it easier or must be done to make current
releases work?

If you are using a Debian based system you are much better off installing the deb file, people have upgraded from Bookworm to Trixie and their virtual environments were wiped.

As far as I know there aren't any experimental builds and the most recent release 5.2.0 seems to have incorporated all pending features at that time.

You could pull from a branch other then the main one I suppose, but that requires a lot more time and effort than installing a package.

As far as I know the github wiki is up to date on where things are at.

See the quickstarts. Both pip and debian package variants work fine.

There are a couple updated .py files you might want for fixes that will be in weewx.next that you might need if you test some things but for a quick test don’t worry that.

I like pip because I can understand what it’s doing better than the nuances of dpkg, but both work fine. If it’s a throwaway box try each way.

Thank you for the rapid reply, the link you suggested, and the fact that
you, with all your knowledge, like pip which should guide me.

One more question:  Is it NECESSARY to use the virtual environment (do
the packages require it) or for a casual user without a lot of other
events being run on the Pi, just go ahead like I did on Pi4s and
previous versions of WeeWx?

Thanks again.  Dale

Your os’s python version requires the vm for the pip method but it’s not really a big deal. Just follow the quickstart.

The dpkg version slams files into the os filesystem using root and uses the os python and packages for python libraries so it doesn’t use a vm.

They both get you to a working setup.
