I got hit by lightning on Monday night and am still adding up things that died.

My server that was pulling data from the Vantage died, so I figured that was the whole problem. The console is still showing data from the station.

I just tried to connect to the Vantage over the datalogger, and it won't connect, so I'm guessing the datalogger is fried, so time for a new weather station.

I just looked at getting a new Vantage Vue, but they all have the new 6313 console and don't have a datalogger anymore.  Internet isn't the best here, so I don't want to grab the data via API and I'm reading conflicting reports on using port 22222 to get the data.

Do I get the new 6313 or a different weather station completely?

Thanks!

I just tried to connect to the Vantage over the datalogger, and it won't connect

That happened on my Vantage console when the memory got corrupted after a near strike that also killed other things, like the Ethernet port on the PC that was connected to the console and a switch on the other end of the Ethernet cable.

I vaguely remember it took a lot of attempts to erase the memory but it's worked ever since.

Have you tried doing a factory reset on the console?

Failing that I'm pretty sure others have mentioned that 2nd hand consoles can be bought from ebay or other online market places.

I will give that a try to hard reset everything.    But insurance is going to buy me a new one if it's really dead.

You only said you couldn't read from it, does that mean the console seems to be working and it's just the memory/data connection?

I suggested getting a 2nd hand one because you said you didn't want to download from the net.

Console sees the station just fine.  I just can't read from it and don't know if a new datalogger would fix it.  I tried a hard reset like you mentioned and the USB is just dead on it.

My biggest concern is the new console without a USB port.   It seems there is also an option to connect to it via port 22222.  Does that work consistently? I'm seeing mixed reviews on it.

My other option is, what is the next best weather station that still has a USB connection to connect to my server that I have to buy and rebuild.

It sounds like you have USB data logger, but you are leaving out many
details. Are you saying that while watching dmesg on some system, you
don't see any attachment messages when you connect the data logger, but
when you plug in some other usb/serial adaptor you do see messages?

It seems reasonable to be worried/skeptical.

It sounds like, if you can find a used serial or USB datalogger, that
would probably work. There are also dataloggers sold by other than
Davis.

There is also "rtldavis" to receive the Vue transmissions directly. I
am not sure if that works on Vue, but it's worth looking into. There
is also the meteobridge product, which has its quirks, but also seems to
have some positives.

I've been using two Meteobridge Nano SD's for years, with no issues with a VP2, in two separate places. Connects wirelessly, and there are a lot of built-in reports and weather site uploads right in the MB firmware. Pays to be sure your devices have router-assigned IP's and that the power supplies are reliable. But they are indeed pricey....

Is there a weewx driver, so that you can run weewx and have it get data
from the meteobridge? Can it use some API on the MB to backfill the
database from old data, assuming the meteobridge stayed up on batteries
and the computer didn't?

Not having good answers to those questions is what I meant by quirks.

I use the weewx vantage driver set for ethernet. But I am not sure there is a backfill provision, though the micro SD card stores data.

Vantage stanza in weewx.conf

[Vantage]

# Connection type: serial or ethernet
# serial (the classic VantagePro)
# ethernet (the WeatherLinkIP or Serial-Ethernet bridge)

# /dev/ttyUSB0 is a common USB port name
# /dev/ttyS0 is a common serial port name
# BSD:
# /dev/cuaU0 is a common serial port name
# port = /dev/ttyUSB0

# If the connection type is ethernet, an IP Address/hostname is required:
host = 192.168.1.14

Thanks everyone for the comments!  I just ordered the new Davis and will see how it goes.    :)

I was concerned without the direct connect USB.
