My Vantage Vue station, weewx and my RPi run fine but from time to time I experiment with another RPi to try out new things, usually using Simulator as my input.

A day or two ago, I put a fresh copy of the latest Raspian (which I think was released just last week - maybe a bad idea!) on an SD card, added the modifications for a RTC, installed nginx and then installed weewx using setup.py. All seemed fine. When I manually fired up weewx, what looked like simulated data began scrolling by on the terminal. I finally stopped it using Cntrl-C. Same thing when I restarted again.

I have never had this happen before. Does anyone recognize this as a simple problem - with a simple solution?

I don't want anyone to spend much time trying to figure this out. The issue seemed so dramatic with screens of data spewing past, I thought someone might recognize the issue. Since I have done so little customization, it may be simpler to start from scratch rather than spending a lot of time trying to ferret out an obscure error if it isn't obvious.

Using the latest release of Raspian may not have been the smartest thing to do, either! I don't think I need any of the latest features so if that's the problem, I can go back to an earlier version.

Thanks again, guys and gals.

Hi,

Might help if you posted a screen capture. When I run weeWX directly it will 'spew' data on the screen, it 'spews' loop packets (prefixed by LOOP:) every 2 odd seconds and archive records (prefixed by REC:) every 5 minutes. Completely expected behaviour. Without knowing what you are seeing it is impossible to know if you have an issue or not.

Just curious - how did you start weewx when this happened?

The light has gone on! The two replies have helped me figure it out.

I used the suggested command:
    sudo ./bin/weewxd weewx.conf

Previously, in other installs, I had gone ahead with the instructions about setting up a daemon and then used the 'start' and 'stop' commands when I needed to. Of course, the daemon does NOT spew data directly on the terminal screen. This time, I thought "I won't set up the daemon yet" and just tried the manual start command. I thought it would be a one-time equivalent of the daemon starting the program on boot up. It isn't.

The link Gary gave to the 'regular' install instructions mentions the spewing of data on the screen. This isn't mentioned in the "Installation using setup.py" quick guide I was using and I wasn't smart enough to realize the two suggested ways of starting weewx cause different outputs.

So, problem solved! I followed the daemon instructions and weewx seems to be running fine. I checked the syslog - seems fine - and when I browse to the html page, I am seeing simulated data. Yahoo!

Now, to wrestle with nginx...

Thanks!
