Mid/end October 47°N, who would expect the outside temperature to rise almost 14°C in only two hours? Even with Föhn this is remarkable.

Very impressive! You're in Austria?

The  California equivalent is the Santa Ana winds. Said Raymond Chandler about them,

"There was a desert wind blowing that night. It was one of those hot dry Santa Anas that come down through the mountain passes and curl your hair and make your nerves jump and your skin itch. On nights like that every booze party ends in a fight. Meek little wives feel the edge of the carving knife and study their husbands' necks."

don't forget the 'crazy ex-girlfriend' rendition.  i'll bet you've never heard a tenor sing "katabatic" before :)

Austria, yes, just a few kilometers south of Salzburg. Föhn impairs a lot of people in their comfort, many have headache, cannot concentrate and don't sleep well. Gotta watch my neck tonight, thank goodness we don't have Föhn in combination with a full moon.

Up north in San Francisco, we call them Diablo winds but same. I've also experienced this "Chinooks" in Calgary. Adiabatic heating.

Another fun fact: at least where I come from, we use "Fö(h)n" if we want to name the device you know as "hair dryer" (although we know the "Haartrockner" = hair dryer, as well). Fön ® is, or was, a registered trademark for hair dryers and the name was inspired by the Föhn. Both produce warm, dry air.

In an amazing coincidence, we had something very like this in Denver, Colorado on the morning of the 19th. It's called a "chinook" wind here. Denver is situated on a flat plain just east of where the Rocky Mountains suddenly begin.

You're right. That's the first time I've heard the word "katabatic" used in a song!

@paul bennet: I don't know if it is so much of a coincidence, Föhn is a phenomenon that is common in spring and fall, rarely seen in winter and summer. Is Chinook also tied to seasons?

"Katabatic" winds are cold winds, like Bora and Mistral, Föhn is warm, so I don't know if we are mixing up phenomenons here. Anyway, talking about all these stuff reminds me, that anytime in the late 2020s, a weewx-groupie from Austria, with a bottle of some kind of single malt in his hands,  will ring a doorbell in Hood River, OR.

... so that's what Peter Sellers was trying to convey in the *Return
of the Pink Panther*.

It's winter and there is Föhn, causing the temperature rising more than 10°C in just 90 minutes in the middle of the night. Also interesting, not even 3km from my place the warm air didn't make it through at all, I was glad there is the station of a friend I can check, otherwise I might have no chosen the right outfit for the 18km bike commute this morning.

The two stations are only separated by only 10km with almost no elevation changes in between, the temperature difference almost 12°C.

Also interesting, the other parameters: the change in the wind speed, wind direction an the relative humidity, the föhn ist so dry, even the dewpoint drops.
