I note that 4.6.0 is the current version. Somehow, I missed the big
announcement. I'm ready to update and test my Phenology extension for
compatibility. Is 4.6.0 likely to stay current for months?

Yes, it is out, and it will stay current.
Despite its size, V4.6 introduces only two minor incompatibility changes, both documented in the Upgrade Guide.
