WeChangeLA's 2011 Big Sunday Event

WeChangeLA was born two years ago inspired by a shared belief that each of us had the ability and the duty to bring Change to our community. Some of us joined as an extension of our efforts in the Obama for America campaign; others were moved by civic duty and a desire to engage in our community. Since its inception WeChangeLA has done amazing work with incredible charity organizations and worthwhile campaigns.
WeChangeLA has been quiet for a little while, but we are back and eager to organize fun events and do good work.
This Big Sunday Weekend, WeChangeLA will once again be rolling up our sleeves to help valuable charity organizations. This year WeChange LA will be organizing for two events in the San Fernando Valley. It is our hope that with a project on each day, we can get many more volunteers to participate and make a difference in our community. On Saturday, May 14th, we will be helping the Youth Policy Institute AmeriCorps program build a reading garden to encourage kids to read and to promote literacy. On Sunday, May 15th, we will return to the Mary Magdalene Project residence to garden, paint and fix up the home for women transition out of prostitution.

WeChangeLA has identified another great cause in need of great volunteers. The Youth Policy Institute AmeriCorps program works to strengthen communities by training and placing AmeriCorps members in schools to tutor kids in reading. This Big Sunday weekend at the San Fernando Institute of Applied Media, we will be teaming up with them to create a reading garden to encourage kids to read and to promote literacy. This is a school with no library and few books. In the hopes of inspiring kids to read and to promote literacy, the garden will include a mural, benches, flowers and plants and will have literacy as the theme.

WeChangeLA has remained committed to an ongoing relationship with this important, meaningful and life-changing organization. The Mary Magdalene Project focuses on empowering women who have been victimized by prostitution with the opportunity and tools to turn their lives around. To that end, they operate a Drop-in Center and a residence in the San Fernando Valley. The residence allows The Mary Magdalene Project to assist women transitioning out of "the life" by providing safety, structure, therapy as well as an extensive program specific to their needs.
