Proper health care is a right that all Americans must be afforded. As
we support the Obama Administration and its Health Care Reform Bill
there is something we can do right here in our own community to aid folks
who lack access to basic, daily health care. Through our work with food
pantries and shelters in The San Fernando Valley WeChangeLA has been
made aware of the need for basic, household health care items. From
toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap and shampoo to diapers, Qtips and sunscreen
(see full list below) there is a need for the most basic household health
care items which we take for granted every day. On Saturday, June
27th and Sunday, June 28th WeChangeLA will do what we can to fill that
need by asking our members, neighbors and local businesses to donate
as many household healthcare items as they can. Once collected we will
deliver the items to Mary Magdalene Project (http://www.mmp.org/),
SOVA (http://www.jfsla.org/sova/) and the San Fernando Valley Rescue
Mission (http://www.erescuemission.org/Display.asp?Page=sfvrmhome).
They, in turn, will ensure that folks who are struggling to get by in our own
community are able to see to their most basic, daily health care
needs.
On Saturday, June 27th at 10am we will meet at North Hollywood Park
(11455 Magnolia Blvd North Hollywood, CA 91601) on the North side of
Magnolia between Tujunga and the 170. Upon arrival volunteers will be
presented with lists of needed household healthcare items (see list below)
stapled to brown paper shopping bags. We will then return to our own
neighborhoods and knock on our neighbors doors asking them to help us by
donating items from the list. They will be instructed to leave the bag on their
doorstep the next day (Sunday) once they have filled the bag with items. If our
neighbors aren't home, we'll simply drop the bags, the lists and an instruction
sheet at our neighbor's doorsteps. The following day, Sunday, June 28th at 7pm
we will return to those houses we visited and pick up the bags which our neighbors
have filled. Beyond that we will canvass outside local grocery and drug stores
and provide drop-off sites all weekend for folks to drop off the items we need.
In the meantime, please ask your dentist for an extra toothbrush or
five, the hotel you stay at for extra soap and shampoo and the next
time you're at the drug store feel free to buy extra Kleenex.
Healthcare starts at home. WeChangeLA is committed to helping everyone in
