Thank you for all that you have done in this long fight for health
care reform.
Opponents created a narrative incongruent with the truth and fueled by
fear. You fought back with facts and courage. Many who stood opposed
to health care reform disingenuously vocalized concerns over parts of
the bill and of the legislative process whilst failing to genuinely
contribute to the bill's contents or work within the process to make
it better. You saw through this political theater and kept up the
pressure.
At every opportunity, progress for Americans facing a broken and
unfair health insurance system has been obstructed not by ideaology,
not by principle but by partisanship. Those Democrats who voted for
health care reform tonight voted for a better future for all
Americans. Those who failed to stand with the President and for the
American people mustn't continue to allow a narrative of fear to
infect their decision making. Each of them was elected to represent
the interests of their constituents, undeterred from reelection
concerns or political viability. Their charge is to do what is right
for the people not what is safe for themselves. Our charge, as an
engaged constituency, is to hold them to that responsibility.
Many of you took your charge seriously and did your part. Thank you
for your efforts; thank you for finishing this fight. As you know,
the fight continues; new elections and new legislation are in our
future. And remember, Together WeChangeLA.
