The other thing that prompted an evolution in my Genesis workflow is page builders, especially Beaver Builder which we started using on client sites almost 2 years ago. Again, with a mindset of efficiency and streamlining our processes, Beaver Builder has enabled us to create more complex layouts a lot faster and easier than coding them by hand. It has also enabled us to empower clients to take control of their content like never before. I will write a separate review of Beaver Builder eventually but it has given us a whole other level of flexibility when building our Genesis based sites with add-ons like Beaver Themer and others. This flexibility enables us to keep the more important and sensitive functionality in Genesis, the child theme, and functionality plugins while giving better control of the content to clients when needed and in a way that makes sense.

So, contrary to 2 of my previous 3 themes toolset posts, this one does not describe catastrophic issues, broken sites and other problems requiring finding new solutions. Genesis is the WordPress theme and framework I have used the longest now. We still support sites that were created using iThemes Builder and WooThemes Canvas but we have not built a new site using anything other than Genesis since mid-2013.

These forums are for general discussion on WordPress and Genesis. Official support for StudioPress themes is offered exclusively at My StudioPress. Responses in this forum are not guaranteed. Please note that this forum will require a new username, separate from the one used for My.StudioPress.

Default templates are in the parent directory, not the child theme's. The default template for pages is page.php, for posts it is single.php. If you're going to customize them, copy them to your child theme directory.

I think you'll be surprised at how little code they actually contain. They both simply call the genesis() function. That's where all the work takes place. What are you trying to customize? Those two files are rarely touched for customizations. Genesis customizations are generally handled through WordPress/Genesis hooks (actions and filters).

I just want to have the option of selecting a custom template that gives me the ability for full browser width colors for the front page only. It looks like custom widgets will be needed which is fine by me.

Want to start a debate that will continue until all parties are too exhausted to keep going? Ask about methods or reasons for updating Genesis child themes. Preferably in a public place like the Genesis Facebook group.

Issues like those are exactly why I started building sites using the Genesis framework exclusively. Genesis uses a parent/child theme system to make sure people can update the parent without ever worrying that their work will be ruined.

Genesis framework: This is the parent theme. It contains all the files (bunches of them) needed to work with WordPress, and it updates periodically when changes are needed to maintain compatibility or fix bugs. These updates need to be applied to keep Genesis sites working properly.

If a client hires someone else to work on his/her site, is that person going to understand why you ignored StudioPress best practices? Will s/he be able to do what the client requests without spending unnecessary time hunting down where the changes live or figuring out why direct edits are being overridden?

Your clients pick up on a great deal from their interactions with you. If you are constantly stressing about child theme version bumps or miniscule CSS changes, the Genesis framework (which you touted as being easy to use) sounds intimidating and finicky.

Woot! Excellent post on this topic that I will be using for all support questions regarding theme updates. Thank you for taking the time to run through the scenarios and the why/why nots of how it works.

Glad to hear it will be useful! I hate seeing people go to such great lengths (and so much effort!) to do the opposite of what Genesis is meant to do. Hopefully this will make sense to some and make their lives easier.

many thanks for your article. I need help right now. Ive started using a genesis theme i purchased some months ago. a developer [i contracted, but im not longer using] put in the heading and sub heading in a previous theme. upon changing to the genesis theme, i want to change the sub heading. can you help me with that please.

It really depends on what you need to do. Dynamik will allow you to build child themes and export them into standalone child themes if you want, but Beaver Builder is easier to learn and use I think. What type of customizations are you planning?

I am currently pondering whether I should update my child theme. Your article is putting my mind at ease, as the change was recommended by someone who said I should update my theme, since, I was told that it is XHTML and not HTML5. But Genesis Framework is HTML5. So, I wonder if the old child theme 1.8 is XHTML and if so, if there is any kind of compatibility issue?

Listen, the world can be a terrible place, but it costs zero dollars to be kind to people, whether or not they deserve it. If we all committed to being nice, maybe it would suck less to exist, you know? Highly recommended.

Over the years, I have shared books with similar tones with my children. This year, we were introduced to Red & Lulu by Matt Tavares. From the first time I opened and read the large, hardcover book with my kids,we were hooked.

Beyond the cardinals, we live in Upstate NY where many of the trees that have graced Rockefeller Center have come from. Put the two together and add the magic of the Christmas season, and you have a recipe for a new holiday classic. I know we will read this book many times this season.

Red caught sight of what had happened and flew as fast as he could to catch up to Lulu, but before long, he lost sight of the truck. Red did not give up, he flew all the way to NYC and eventually found Lulu and their tree. Reunited, they happily explored this big, bustling city and made many friends in beautiful Central Park.

When the season was over, Red and Lulu made a new home with their new friends in Central Park. One of the perks of their new location, was that every year they could return to Rockefeller Center and sit on the branches of a new Christmas tree. The whole season long, they could happily enjoy, the sights and sounds of the city that never sleeps, during the most wonderful time of the year. This book shows there is no distance too far to keep a determined cardinal from his loved one in an ode to serendipity and belief that is destined to be a new Christmas classic.

Maybe you feel like you are doing your part to reduce your carbon footprint and leave the world a better place for your children and grandchildren. Take a look at your toothbrush, it is probably made of plastic.

If you are the parent of a teenager, you probably want to know where they go when they are not at home. You may have heard of physical GPS tracking devices that are commonly used, but why go through the trouble and expense of buying that equipment when you can get the information you want using mobile Apps? Apps like Kidgy.com give parents the control they want to monitor their kids and make sure they are safe. Using the Kidgy App, parents can easily track their child using GPS through their smartphone.

Life360 is available for iPhone and Android devices and keeps millions of families and close friends connected, no matter what chaos life throws their way. Organize your family, friends, caregivers and more easily with circles. Add favorite locations like school, work, home and more and receive alerts when circle members arrive at or depart from them. Message the entire circle at once or privately, eliminating the need for endless texts and calls.

My Family is another good family tracking App. Unlike Life360, My Family is available for Windows and Amazon powered devices in addition to android and iOS devices. This App has premium features like the ability to save location history for up to 3 years. My Family also allows parents to make force calls to their kids that cannot be ignored. While this may seem intrusive, sometimes parents need to be, when it comes to the safety of their kids.

My Family also has an emergency button that notifies parents if their child comes across some type of trouble or leaves or enters a certain location. The user interface for My Family is user-friendly, so operating the App is simple. Best of all, My Family is free to use for android, iOS, amazon and windows users.

Despite all the add-ons, this App is simple to use to keep track of your family members, set driving speed limits, program it to receive notifications for certain locations and so much more. The free version of ZoeMob is available for both android and iOS and can be accessed through the product website.

You are going to be seeing some big changes on our blog in the upcoming weeks. We will be changing our look, and think it is long overdue. I purchased one of the most popular website themes, Genesis Framework, many months ago.

The good thing about Genesis Framework is that once you buy it, it is yours to use for life. This is an extremely good thing when like me, life gets in the way, and your plans to update your website get delayed. I had not decided on a StudioPress Child Theme to go along with my Genesis Framework, and that turned out to be a good thing!

I wasted no time in shopping for my new child theme. The ones I like the best and have been debating over are: Mom Blogger Pro, Lifestyle and Magazine. However, with the Pro Plus Pack being 50% off too and letting me have access to all the themes, that was very tempting!

I finally made my decision and pulled the trigger this morning. I love that I was able to snatch up such a great theme at an even better price. If you have been waiting to purchase themes for your website, you can also benefit by getting great pricing on all kinds of themes. They have a huge selection of themes to create or customize your website whether you are a foodie, author, online retailer, realtor, photographer or any other kind of professional or business.
