DCDMV also has two self-service on-board diagnostic (OBD) emissions test kiosks which allow District residents to perform their own vehicle emissions tests, 24-hours, seven days per week. Visit our kiosks located in Ward 4's Takoma Recreation Center, and Ward 8's Fort Stanton Recreation Center.

The best times to visit the inspection station are Thursday or Friday from 8:30 am to 10 am and 1:30 pm to 3 pm. You may also schedule an appointment online; however, an appointment is not required. The link for scheduling an appointment is below:

The best times to visit the inspection station are Thursday or Friday from 8:30 am to 10 am and 1:30 pm to 3 pm. Customers are advised Tuesday and the days before and after a holiday are especially busy. Other busy hours to avoid are the first hour of opening and during lunch times 10 am to 1 pm.

Please note some Online Services are only available after an initial visit to the DMV. Vehicle registration renewals may only be done online, by mail or using our dropbox service; in-person registration renewals has been eliminated.

If a station's waiting queue (inside the ticket gate) is full, with 10 or more vehicles waiting outside the building, the station will close the gate. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but it is necessary to enable our staff to complete their duties by 6 PM. We appreciate your understanding.

LOW PROFILE RIMS & OVERSIZED TIRES - Please note that front-wheel and all-wheel drive vehicles with low-profile rim sizes 17-inches-or-larger in diameter or vehicles with wheel sizes larger than 34 inches must be tested on special dynamometers capable of testing vehicles with these unusual features. Please take your vehicle to the Sheridan, Boulder, Ken Caryl or Fort Collins stations for inspection. These are the only stations in the program area equipped with specialized dynamometers that can test these vehicles.

Avoid waiting. Currently, due to the COVID-19 related station closures, all open stations are extremely busy. Mondays all day and early mornings are the busiest times. Mid to late afternoons are the least busy times. High volume times to always avoid are Mondays, the first business day after ANY holiday, and the last few days of the month.

Get an E-Check at your convenience 24/7, with one of our self-service kiosks that have been added at 18 E-Check stations and 3 located near a BMV License Bureau throughout Northeast Ohio. These easy-to-use kiosks have step-by-step instructions appearing on the screen to walk you through the simple process of testing your own vehicle. Once testing is complete, the kiosk will print a vehicle inspection report that can be used for vehicle registration or plate transfer. The self-service kiosk is intended to be open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to provide motorists with another testing option that fits their schedules.

If the check engine light is on, you will still be able to test the vehicle, however, you will receive a failing test. The purpose for this would be to obtain the trouble codes for free which you or your mechanic can use to assist in the repair of the vehicle. The vehicle is allowed up to three free tests within a 365 day period. The fourth and any subsequent tests will need to be conducted at a full service station in an inspection lane and will cost $18 each time. Only one free passing test is permitted per 365-day period.

We are happy to announce the installation of our newest self-service kiosk located at the North Olmsted BMV 26642 Brookpark Extension in North Olmsted, OH 44070. This kiosk is located next to the North Olmsted BMV License Bureau. It joins the kiosk located at University Corners Plaza on Cedarbrook Rd in University Hts, OH 44118. This kiosk is in the same plaza as the University Heights BMV License Bureau. Also, it is joining the kiosk located at 135 North Pardee St, Wadsworth, OH 44281 (at the corner of King & North Pardee) near the Wadsworth BMV License Bureau making three self-service E-Check kiosks near BMV License Bureaus.

To view the full list of Kiosk locations, please click the E-Check tab on the blue bar above and select Self-Service Kiosk in the drop-down menu. This will take you to the Self-Service Kiosk page that has a brief description of the kiosk operation and has locations of all 21 Self-Service Kiosks available for testing. If a kiosk is unavailable for testing, this web page will also provide the kiosk status.

Schedule an appointment for service Monday through Friday or stop by during office hours (no appointment). Walk-in applicants for road skills testing must be present by 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and by 11:30 a.m. on Saturdays in order to test that day.

Driver's license applicants who fail the knowledge exam or road skills test three times, must successfully complete the applicable knowledge or in-vehicle component of a driver education course before they can take the examination a fourth time.

All road skills tests are conducted in vehicle, on the road and in English, unless an interpreter is required*. Only the applicant and the DMV representative are allowed in the vehicle during the road skills test.

Motor vehicle exhaust emissions are a significant source of pollution, including carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons. These pollutants can be harmful to human health and the environment and lead to the formation of ground level ozone (smog). Exhaust emissions from cars and trucks are one of the single greatest sources of air pollution in the Chicago and Metro-East St. Louis areas.

Through the On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) test, vehicle emissions inspections in Illinois identify malfunctioning emission control systems that often result in vehicles exceeding federal emission standards. Requiring repairs on such vehicles helps clean the air while improving the vehicle's performance and fuel economy.

Most 1996 and newer gasoline-powered passenger vehicles are subject to emissions inspections after they are four years old (e.g. 2012 vehicles are being inspected in 2016 for the first time). The inspection month coincides with the expiration date of the vehicle license plate. Typically, even model-year vehicles are inspected during even years, and odd model-year vehicles are inspected in odd years.

A: If a vehicle fails either portion of the emissions test, the owner must have the emissions-related repairs performed before being retested. There is no charge to the motorist for retesting failed vehicles. Satisfactory completion of the test requirements is necessary before vehicle registration renewal. The lane technician provides all motorists with an informational brochure at the initial failed test to explain the repair and retest process.

A: Under certain conditions vehicle owners may apply to the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) for an exhaust emissions waiver. The Division does not grant waivers for failed fuel system tests or safety examinations. Waivers are issued to vehicles that continue to fail the exhaust emissions test even after appropriate repairs have been made. To be eligible, all items on the following check list must apply:

A: The federal Clean Air Act spells out air quality standards that all areas of the United States must meet. Motor vehicles are one of the major causes of air pollutants. Vehicle emissions include carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC). Vehicle testing assures that vehicle-generated emissions are within specified standards.

A: Typically, vehicles are tested biennially based upon the model year "and vehicles being titled/registered for the first time in Delaware". The testing is required prior to registration renewal. Vehicles in the first 7 model years are excluded from testing. The Division electronically sends registration renewal notices approximately 90 days before registrations expire. Set up electronic renewal notification.

A: When a motorist enters the test facility, the lane associate will ask for the vehicle to be placed in a park position. Once the vehicle is safely parked, the lane associate will ask for the vehicle registration card and the odometer reading to enter the essential information into a computer system. Below is a chart breaking down the emission standards for the State of Delaware per The Department of Natural Resources and Environment Control (DNREC).
