It is always better to close the account if you do not want to keep it as opening a bank account comes under the purview of contract act. You have moral obligation to surrender your ATM-cu-Debit Card, Credit Card, unused Cheque Books to the Bank. Bank may change its rules and apply maintenance charges on such ZERO account balances and minimum balance charges and the customer is legally bound to pay such charges. If not paid your account may show clean overdraft which may be reflected in your CIBIL credit report disabling you to obtain any loan from any bank as you can be treated as defaulter for not having paid the minimum balance or maintenance charges. More over if somebody hacks your account and does fraudulent transactions in your such account you may lend yourself into trouble as you will have to co-operate with investigating agencies as you are legally bound to explain for transactions done through your account, though fraudulently.
