Triggers may have inputs

When you need to configure a trigger you need to somehow give it a parameter. For example, a cron trigger would need to be configured for a certain frequency. It seems like input would be the only way to do that.

This is true. Perhaps a trigger isn't just a block with no inputs, but rather a block who's inputs are evaluated at time of "subscription". This could get confusing in the pipes UI though.

Well you might not have to make that differentiation if it "just works". Let's try it and see how it feels. We'll amend definitions and such once we've validated it.
