I wasn't able to make the meetup in Baltimore this past weekend. From
Alice's description (http://baltimore.predevcamp.org/2009/08/10/
success/), it sounds like there was a good turnout.

I would be interested in attending a meetup in the NoVA area. Are
there enough people interested in forming a group? If it helps, I'd
be glad to try and arrange a meeting location...

I'd love to be a part of a NVA group. I live in Sterling, VA & work in
Tyson's, VA.

So it looks like a few of us are up for meeting up in Northern VA
sometime next week.

No location as of yet, but it would be in the general vicinity of
Alexandria/Arlington/Falls Church/Tysons I think.

I'm thinking afternoon if we meet next weekend, or an evening if we're
meeting on a weekday.

Feel free to post to this thread with suggestions for locations and
specific times.

Um, I'm sure we can find some place in NOVA so that we don't have to go to MD.

lol, Matt is the loan Marylander it seems!  He's probably just as far from B'more as NOVA though, being in Frederick.  We could try Tyson's or even some place just a bit further north, but Tyson's seems like the best bet in VA that's as close to MD as you can get...

Panera Bread - 10702 Lee Hwy, fairfax

Perks Cafe & Coffee House
6641 Arlington Blvd. Falls Church

I work in Tyson's, so that would be perfect. I'll try and do some research as to a place we could maybe use to meet. BTW/FYI: The Dunn Loring Stop on Orange Line towards Vienna is the closest to Tyson's. I can pick a couple (two) folks from the Dunn Loring metro if we decide it'll be in Tyson's.

Perks is closer to me. And a little closer to 495 for those
commuting. There's a Panera at Tyson's, as well:

8365 Leesburg Pike # B, Vienna, VA 22182-2410

Good by me as well.

Should we plan on discussing any particular topics? If anyone has a set of topics they'd like covered, perhaps we can prepare some materials/links/etc to address them ahead of time.

I guess personally I'd rather Panera to Perks since I'm not a coffee-drinker, but it's really all the same otherwise.

I've never been to Perk's but I have been to the Panera's in Tyson's.  It's pretty large, and it also is a lot more accessible, being near 495, and Dulles Toal Rd.  Perk's seems tucked somewhat far in, in an area that can get pretty conjested - both during the week and weekends.  So my vote would be for Tyson's Panera...

I don't know about anyone else, but a begin to end demonstrarion would be awesome. Basically from writing the code, build it, and install it on the phone. I don't know everyone's experience level, but it might be cool for a first meet topic. Also for those of you that have done some coding already, some tips would be cool as well.

Just a suggestion.

Can I suggest another topic/goal?  I know some of you are already coding your own apps.  I've been so wrapped up in selling our current house and buying a new one that it's left me with little time to do much reading on WebOS.  Now that I'm going to have a little more free time, I want to start delving in, but part of what usually helps in motivating me to learn something new is to have an actual REASON behind it!  That is a project in mind.  So I'm wondering if anyone might be interested in coming up with an app that's developed by the whole group?  Or would that be too unmanageable?  I figure with the amount of resources we have, we could invest a reasonable amount of time into it and get something out there that's pretty competitive or, who knows, maybe even unique!  Or it could just be a nice exercise in creating a relatively small app with a group, and if one of us is having a hard time due to lack of experience, they could query others in the group for help?  Maybe something just for fun, but that also has potential for being a useful addition to the homebrew app catalog?  I don't know, just a thought...

Evan,

Personally, I'm not so interested in modding the existing apps. There
are communities out there doing this and I suggest if you're
interested you catch up with the webOS internals folks. My feeling is
that Palm will be releasing new versions of their in-built apps
shortly and most of the patches will be rendered moot (or at least,
will require a rework). Also, I think that the Palm apps may be a bit
like jumping into the deep end for most people.

I'd be happy to open up one of my app ideas for us all to work on
together or we can brainstorm for a bit and come up with some ideas.
The field is wide open.

I agree with Levi in that we should leave the built-in apps alone because as Levi mentioned Palm or the group of developers will most likely improve upon them and would probably break what we've changed. That said, we could/should create a relatively unique app IMO. I'm not a programmer, but more of an idea guy.

My initial application for the Pre that I'd like to see is an AutoDimmer/Brightness program. Purpose: To automatically initiate a new brightness profile according to the time of day or night. Reason: I leave my device on my night stand and I think/remember things @ all hours of the day/night. I only need minimal brightness @ night and durng the day I'd like it to change to mid-brightness, but in a dark conference hall maybe kick off the 2/3 brightness profile. There is a similar application for PalmOS named PowerMan  that I use and love on my Palm Centro. Any thoughts?

I have started, in my spare time on writing an rss reader, very similar to the email app.  I figured it was more advanced than the hello world app but not too advanced that I'd choke on it, as it already leverages some web technologies.  Any work with scenes in the next meeting would be great.

There is source code available for an RSS reader developed in-house at Palm which is the basis for many of the examples in the Palm webOS book from O'Reilly. This may be of use to you. I've still not come across a copy of the full, final source online, but please do post to list if anyone comes across this!

I'll attend whatever the presenter wants to present as long as it is announced at least a week or two. That'll give me enough time to re-arrange my schedule. Ultimately, I don't think there will be a perfect time that all of us would agreed to and we just need to prioritize this event against all of our other commitments :)

Looks like we probably aren't meeting today, right? In general, evenings are better for me than other times during the day and weekdays are probably better than weekends.  But my schedule is someone random right now, so I don't want to influence when we meet.  If it turns out to be a convenient time, great, otherwise I'll try the next time...

I agree with Yusuf. IMHO, the presenter(s) should decide when/where
it's convenient for them. Give people a head's up a week or two in
advance, and, hopefully, most people will be able to attend the
meetup.

On a related note, there's an iPhone/Android/Smartphone meetup in
McLean, VA next Wed at 6PM. Here's a link for more info:

Hope to see you there.

James
