CHANDIGARH: Polluting industries in Gurgaon and Faridabad are feeling
the heat with the Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB)
serving to noticing to as many as 300 industries in the last two
months.

The board, which has about 3,000 industries in Gurgaon, Faridabad and
Ballabhgarh townships under its ambit, is waiting for replies from
these industries for further action.

The drive has been carried out across the national capital region
(NCR) of the state. Since these two cities have recorded alarming
pollution levels, we put special focus there, said HSPCB chairman AS
Chahal.

Most of the industries served notices have defaulted in installing or
upgrading effluent treatment plants ( ETPs) resulting in ground water
pollution due to mixing of untreated industrial discharge into sewage
lines, said Chahal. Last year, the board had sealed 384 polluting
industries in Panipat and NCR areas of the state.

This year, Munjal Showa Limited, an associate industry of Hero Honda
group, was one of the industries that was sealed by the board. Last
month, the board had forfeited Rs 1.25 crore, one fourth of the bank
guarantee, furnished by the Munjal Showa group as the latter failed to
keep its commitment of putting pollution control measures in place.

Industries are required to submit phase-wise, time-bound action plan
for putting pollution control measures in place while furnishing bank
guarantee of the amount fixed by the board.

Industry bodies have, however, reacted to this. Units falling in the
orange category must adhere to rules. But, we see this as a move to
target medium and small entrepreneurs, said Colonel (retd) Raj Singla,
president of Chamber of Industries of Udyog Vihar.
