WebLogic server is based on Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE), the standard platform used to create Java-based multi-tier enterprise applications. J2EE platform technologies were developed through the efforts of BEA Systems and other vendors in collaboration with the main developer, Sun Microsystems.


Weblogic is a Java EE application server. It is a commercial product developed and sold by Oracle as part of their Oracle Fusion Middleware suite. Weblogic was originally developed by BEA, who Oracle bought in 2008.

An application server is a runtime platform to run serverside applications, and typically provides servces to support the ‘-ilitiies’, such as:

availability
scalability
security
(and others)
Java EE (Java Platform, Enterprise Edition) is a collection of API specifications that extend the core Java SE platform, adding support for developing enterprise applications. Example APIs included in Java EE are, Servlet, EJB, JPA, JTA.

Oracle Weblogic as a product implements these API specifications, providing the runtime platform for Java EE based applications.
