A few of us were discussing variegated Agaves or Furcreas appearing
recently in landscaping in Florida (at least).

The ones I have seen seem to be more Furcrea like because they lack
terminal spines (pointed but not spines) on the leaves but they have
spines on the margins near the base. These plants have a range of
about 4 shades of variegation. Someone suggested Furcrea foetida
"Variegated'. However, it just does not look right for that plant
either. Leaves are too broad and stiff and regular compared to the
species in Mary Irish book.

Yesterday I bought 2 pups of Agave lophantha roseolata
'Variegated' (aka 'Quadricolor'). I saw a larger one and it was even
more intensely colored from the plants I have been seeing in
landscaping and is much stiffer leafed and spine - unmistakeably agave-
like.

Maybe there is more than one plant out there.

Photo of my puppy. Doesn't give a full impression of the striking
variegation in the larger plant I saw. At least 4 shades of green,
cream and gray.

Hey folks I'm kind of back again...the comp is working but I have lots of reinstallations to do.

Kit there are two species of Furcraea in the trade here ( and an unknown number of varieties) from what I can ascertain.

F. foetida "mediopicta" is the more common and appears to be the less rigid type. It has variegated midlines.

Furcraea selloa var marginata is less common here and is more rigid looking to my eye. The variegation is toward the outer margins.

I'm sure countless seedling variations and hybrids exist as well as the non variegated forms, and sports such as this:

I have lots of the green bulbils ready right now if anyone wants some.

Anyone else have more data on these?

Chris--

Glad to see you're back. I've still got your Pterocarpus seeds here;
I'll try to get 'em mailed off to you today.

I've also got green Furcraea foetida (big 1gals) (also white Crinum
asiaticum in 1gal) . I've got to move soon; if you're close to me, you
can pick 'em up for free in Loxahatchee. The less stuff I have to move
or dump the better.

Wish I had room for more stuff, but alas I don't unless it's something I can't get locally. Thanks for the offer, though. Seems I can't even give green Furcraeas away either. Maybe I'll just do some guerilla planting on City property.  Their landscaping sucks anyway.

BTW Where are you moving to? Calle Ocho? Heh

The ones here look most like the Furcrea foetida but still not
convinced they are the same. The leaves in your photo are too many and
too tightly grouped and not broad enough. The spines along the base of
the leaves are not like the F. foetida I have lots of - green,
spineless and soft leafed. (by the way I saw them used in a brand new
expensive house - went into flower almost immediately and now removed)

I think Loxahatchee's going to have a mass planting here after I
leave.

Not really sure where I'm going yet, hopefully just down the road
aways to a little cheaper pad. Looked like all the dumpsters and
doorways on Calle Ocho were already "rented"...
