A friend cannot make WebGL run on any of the Mac browsers. Specs are:

Mac OS X version 10.4.11
2 Ghz Intel Core Duo
Graphics Intel GMA 950.

Any ideas?

uhm, 1) buy a GPU card and b) use Minefield/Chrome for now?

Henrik,

From http://www.khronos.org/webgl/wiki/Implementations/Firefox :

"Requires an OpenGL 2.0-capable GPU and drivers. In particular, most
flavours of Intel's integrated GPUs will not work (such as the
GMA900/GMA950 often found in laptops)."

Given that WebGL is based on OpenGL ES 2.0, this will apply across all
implementations.

http://developer.apple.com/graphicsimaging/opengl/capabilities/GLInfo_10411Intel.html
indicates that the card only supports GL 1.2, which is likely the
problem. I thought the software renderer would work in this case, but
it may not support a recent enough version of GL either.

WebGL in WebKit works fine on Intel Macbooks running OS X 10.6

Current builds of WebKit disable hardware acceleration in OS X 10.5 (and earlier) because of a known bug in Quicktime composition that Apple will not fix. This disables WebGL as well.

The last build of Webkit that works with OS X 10.5 is r55043.

Regards,
Mark

I should add my Macbook specs:

Mac OS X version 10.5.8
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Graphics Intel GMA X3100
OpenGL Driver Monitor 1.4

I have the same machine. This week when Fedora 13 releases, I am going
to install it on my macbook and then try chrome/minefield on it. I
think the graphics card won't provide 3D, so I will try my luck with
software acceleration (I think minefield about:config has that
option).

Sorry to revive an old thread.

I recently managed to install Fedora 13 on my MacBook and could get
WebGL running in Minefield with libOSMesa. It's little slow, but good
enough for small development tasks. So that's an option if anyone is
interested.

I am pondering whether I should invest in Snow Leopard for this
Macbook. But I want to make sure that Webkit nightly will run webgl on
it.

My 3.5 yr old Macbook (version 2,1) has Intel Core 2 duo , and 945GM
Integrated Graphics Controller. I have read reports that Snow leopard
runs on it. I believe 945GM should be sufficient for the WebGL through
Webkit, but I am not sure. If anyone on this list has Snow leopard (or
leopard for that matter) on this hardware and is running Webkit-WebGL
successfully, please let me know.

Thanks.

WebGL on 945GM looks unlikely - the 945GM apparently supports only
OpenGL 1.4 (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_GMA). I have a
newer Intel 4500MHD (which apparently supports OpenGL 2.1), on which I
was able to get WebGL working using a particular version of Firefox,
namely 3.7a4, using the latest Intel drivers. Latest versions of
Firefox, 3.7a5 and a6, however didn't work, also Chromium nightlies
failed to work. I am using Windows on this laptop.
