It appears that space templates are purely a metadata concept. In
other words, unlike page
templates (site templates in 11.1.1.3) you do not use ADF to create
and layout the template
but rather create them using the composer in WebCenter.

Is there any way for us to deploy space templates in 11.1.1.4 through
a MAR file or other
mechanism so that we can import them into the MDS repository?

I am fairly new to WebCenter development and what we are trying to do
is set up default
task flows that will appear when a space is created. Including them
in a space template
looks like the right thing to do, but how do we ship a space template
as part of our product?

On the spaces templates Administration screen, you can export and import Spaces templates.

Unfortunately there is no way to copy out of box templates. It would be easier to copy a space template and make only necessary changes to the copied template.

A workaround to that is
1) Create a space using out of box Space Template.
2) Make necessary changes to the space. E.g. Add new pages and taskflows to the page.
3) Create a new Space template
4) On the spaces section select the newly created space
5) On the Content section select only Pages.
6) Export the newly created template. An EAR file is exported with a MAR inside.

Hope that answers your question.

Thanks
Tarun

Thanks Tarun,

After reading your reply and trying it myself I understand how it
works. In addition, I found that the right place to include the task
flows is in the pages which are listed in the Personalize Pages admin
page for the space.

My only concern now is whether the custom task flows we create and
need to display will appear in these pages after we have deployed our
extension library and imported the space template.
I'm hoping the process is robust and seamless. I'll wait for the
official DesignWebCenterSpaces extension project which is coming out
next Tuesday.
