Hi guys,

Please apologize me for the long delay and slow updates. I've been busy around with some client work, but finally I found time to work on the Webcamp Saigon's website. Please see attachments for some concepts I came up with.

Three days ago I discussed with Duc Ban and Anh Hung about the possibility of having a Job Board for web and UI design/dev niche, since Vietnamworks, Kiemviec,... are awful in term of quality. My idea is developing a simple job board as an add-on feature for Webcamp Saigon; so companies, agencies, ... can post job for free (we can provide premium service later and use the money for site maintenance, workshops and events). I think this features will be a great resources for companies, developers, designers and freelancers.

Another thing I need your inputs is the CMS for Webcamp Saigon's website. For now Wordpress is a good option, but for the long run, I think Drupal will be a better choice because it's more powerful and flexible. How do you think? We're looking forward to getting the design approved within next week and move to the development phase, so we will have an impressive presentation at Barcamp Saigon in Nov :)

As always, your feedback would be appreciated!

All the best,

Hi guys,

To me, the designs are super clean and standard but a bit boring, I've seen some very sexy designs from Mr Min Tran so I think he could definately improve it. As you all know, web design is not only about usability, but also the beauty of visual.

Maybe we could add some combinations of colors or an illustrated character, bla, bla

Hi Tien,

Thanks for your feedback.

One of the core objective of the design for Webcamp Saigon is it has to be simple and minimal design. Since our site is content-oriented, I think simple color scheme with the magazine-like structure will serve the content better. How do you think?

Is there any idea about the job board and the CMS? I need your inputs before moving ahead with the CMS implementation.

Totally agreed about the simple and minimal direction, I just think that some simple treatments of colors may help to make the site doesn't look like a PDF. Let's use smashingmagazine.com as a sample, with the very simple solid background color for navigation and headlines, different color for links, bla bla .., it does help the look and feel of this content-oriented blog be enough eye-catching.

I do like the way you have blue background for navigation in one of the option, maybe we can incorporate some more for headlines and links, some little icons might help as well.

The job board is a great idea, I also had the idea of creating a freelancer community quite long time but haven't got time to do it. The job board may help to improve the industry definately.

About the CMS, I think Wordpress would go better with what we need, but understanding that every CMS has its own advantages and disadvantages, so it depends on how much you know, how familiar you are with a certain CMS. Every CMS is great

Just some ideas coming thru the office time. Nice work, Mr Min Tran

By the way, my name is Huy.

Wow, finally the new designs has come to town.

I do prefer the design2-blue-nav.png coz it gives me the bold look.

I also love the idea of job boards for creative, too.

Thank you for your hard work.

About the cms behind the scene, I have no idea about it. :D. That's
all up to you guys' vision.

Hi All,

I prefer the design2-light-nav, not because the clean and minimal
features, but because this is the most balanced design. I think we all
know what would be the bad if we couldn't control the content of the
site. At what I saw, the design2-light-nav can handle it.

I also like the way the Time New Roman typeface was set. We are
WebCamp folks, so our Web Site need to be clean, and legible.

Drupal is ok.

Ban.

I'm with the light design too. This a content-focused website and the
light version serves just that purpose. The blue navigation bar draws
too much attention away from the main content section.

When I first enter the light version Website, my eyes will stay
focused on the featured post where the blue version takes me to
navigation.

Regarding the CMS, I think either WP or Drupal is fine. However, if we
have someone familiar with Drupal I suggest we go with that system.
It's more flexible and scalable. Not that we're ambitious, but we
should leave room for future expansion. Who knows what this thing will
evolve into.

For the job board, we'll do a pretty good job. You guys here are
experts in the field and your recommendation adds more value than a
generic recruitement service. Good niche. Not a lot of money to make
in the beginning but I guess we just need this organization to be
self-sustainable.

Min will finalize the design today so please provide him with as many
feedbacks as possible. You don't need to be nice. Just speak out.
Because those who matter don't mind, and those who mind don't matter.

Have a nice week!

Cheers,

Hi all,

I've just spent some time looking for the whole 3 design concepts:

- Design 1: it's simple, eye-focus on the content it-self but the
whole style of the design is something similar, it's just like many
other sites' design
- Design 2, blue nav: the navigation, it's more attractive than the
content btw. Further more, the design of this nav is something, hmmmm,
don't know what to say but it'll narrow down the site's looking

- Design 2, light nav: I'm with this. It helps me to stay focus on the
content. But I think I have some thinking 'bout the design:
+ The nav bar must not have the vertical-separator (hope everyone
understand what I mean =D), it makes me feel the website is being
narrow down
+ Also the main nav, I think we can have an exchange of search box
and the sub-navigation bar. So the: Trang chủ, Bài Viết, Tuyển dụng,
Sự kiện, Giới thiệu, Liên hệ, Sitemap,... will be on the same line.
And the search box will stay next to the logo.
+ Also the main nav, or we will have the the sub-navigation bar
with some improvement (?) in the design, it's something, hmmm, so so
+ "Xem thêm" link on the sidebar, I think we can improve it
+ About the information in the footer: website được thiết kế... I
think we should try to find some other place or put them somewhere
else on the website.

And 'bout the core system standing behind the website. I've been
working with wordpress for a while, and I think it's just great for
personal purpose, which is fast, easy to use, good looking ACP UI, and
the most important, it's common. Haven't had any chance working with
Drupal yet but I think Drupal is much much better for this kind of
project, and that's it.

Shhhhhhh, i see that the code of wordpress is something ugly and
they're keep improving. Drupal? it's just good =D

Btw, my 2 cents

Hi Nguyen ,

Thanks for your helpful comment. Here are a few notes from me

- I add the "vertical separators" to keep the nav consistent with the rest of the layout. Without it, the navigation feels like doesn't "link" with the rest of the design.
- I put all the items as you suggested on the navigation before, but I think it would be better if users focus on the main features (Bài viết, Tuyển dụng, Sự kiện), so I put "Giới thiệu, liên hệ, sitemap) on the secondary navigation.
- I'm not happy with some of the elements of the design. You're right, "xem thêm" links need more attentions.

I like them all, though my favorite might be design1 because it is has
many subtle separators and cues that clearly divide the sections, but
they are very subtle and softly guide me without distracting.

But I am not so qualified to talk about the details of visual/graphic
design :)

From a Information perspective, I like design1 because the 'sticky
post' at the top is more clearly defined, and works better to
introduce the webcamp site. design 2 emphasizes the ongoing content a
little more, which is maybe more appropriate for the site when it has
a well-established, active community and a nice archive.

Of course, we hope to reach the "well-established, active community"
phase very quickly, right? :)
