I've been using WC v18, in LIVE mode, on Virtualbox v4.2.10 and I've encountered the following two issues:

1) Random lockups.  As I browse different sites, WC will randomly lockup.  You cant navigate to other pages or click any links.  I'm forced to power off the VM.

2) Scroll wheel on the mouse does not work.

I have regularly used WC in Virtualbox (still wish the guest additions were installed) and this is the first release with these issue.  I can switch to v16 and do not have these problem.

Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated.

How much memory do you have allocated to the VM? Try add more?

Do you have PAE enabled? http://webconverger.org/img/pae.png

Did this work in 16.0? Is it a regression?

What do the guest additions bring? Copy&paste? And?

Be good if Virtualbox could help debug crashes in their VMs. :)

But don't allocate so much as to starve the host. I've seen both host
and guest suffer if the guest has too much memory allocated and there
isn't enough left for the host.

For the lockups, it looks like it was both PAE & a memory issue.  I had 512 Mb assigned, once I bumped it to 1Gb and enabled PAE the problem went away.

Regarding the mouse issue, in Virtualbox (system -> motherboard), if I have "Enable absolute pointing device" checked, the scroll wheel does not work.  I am able to move the mouse between the VM and the host OS without having to press the "Host Key" to release the mouse.  Once I un-check this option, the scroll wheel starts working but I now have to press the "Host Key" to release the mouse back to the host OS.  Not sure the difference, but with WC v16 this was not an issue with the absolute pointing device option checked.

The reason I'd like the guest additions installed:
1) It should solve the mouse issue
2) Copy/paste (I'd like to copy URL's from my host OS into WC)
3) Higher resolution (currently the system is limited to 1024x768)

Thank you for the help.
