Requesting data to populate a modal rather than a page

Hello, 

If I wanted to populate a form within a modal (bootstrap for example) I'd want to use the fetch for change call passing the ID of the item through and get the data object back to expose to the user. 

However with the way its currently wired up, it can only redirect you to a page, albeit the same, how could I manipulate the request so that it returns a data object for use in the form rather than retturning the full page request?
