Has anyone completed an online directory type of application with
web2py before?

I've been asked to build a local city directory of vendors and
services that clients can log into and pay for products and services.
I thought web2py would be a good test for this kind of application but
I don't want to reinvent something that's already been done before if
it has.

Also I would need to find more information on payment processing for
online ad space etc. I saw the paypal module but I would rather stay
away from that company since it is a private entity and not subject to
US banking rules.

Thanks,
David

From all the searches and informations viewed and readed I can say it
seems to not exist yet an appliance or tutorial for this specific
task. However it dont seem hard to make what you want. Maybe you can
try and in case of problems ask for some guidance.

Give us some specs. We may build one just as an exercise.

For the initial directory I wanted something fairly simple.

It would have categories which listed certain types of services (some
businesses have multiple categories).
These services would be managed by businesses. Sort of like a private
profile page which would let them list their own information in the
directory which
would also be moderated and recaptcha to make sure spam didn't get
injected into the index.

Each business profile could contain multiple pictures and information
specific to that business.
Name, address, contact info, Google Map would be nice, etc

I would also like to create a related link group which would allow the
businesses
to link to their partners that they do business with in the area.
This would be more like
a social proof for that company and would allow networking between
those types of businesses.

On the front end clients would be able to create an account and browse
services but it must be separate from the business listings. I would
like their information
to ultimately be used for checking out via ecommerce in the future.
(not sure how this would be done with the auth system) And this
being
my main stumbling block so far. I suppose I could just offer links on
the front end
that would take the user/business to the correct registration area and
use two different
forms for this purpose.

The customers would be able to rate and review services they've used
sort of like eBay.
The business would be able to respond to these entries if needed.

Ultimately I would like to have a payment option where businesses
could advertise
or bid on link placements/banner placements. Naturally I would like
this all
automated with something other than PlayPal. I have a dedicated
resource server
for this project over at Linode so it can scale easily as resources
are required.

I think that's about it for now. It's a very niche project but it is
a requirement
that I have something running to show the people asking for the work
to be completed.

I could throw some money at it and use Joomla/Wordpress/Drupal modules/
plugins but I would rather use
Web2Py for it.

Thanks,
David
