Well that wouldn’t be a Google-only decision since it’s now a web standard (well technically it’s only an Editor’s draft) and is supported in more than just Chromium-based browser.
However, saying that, I can tell you that Google has no plans to suggest removing this API to the W3C Web Performance Working Group, nor has Chrome any plans to remove the API from the Chromium code. It does have one advantage over event timing in that it can register an input without being concerned with the minimum duration that event timing is. So it will not be completely redundant despite FID as a metric being deprecated (some implementations like web-vitals.js use it in addition to event timing events to calculate INP).
FID itself, however, will be deprecated from Google Tools as per our previous post on this:

Knowing that with INP arrival, FID will no longer be a Core Web Vital, and will be officially deprecated and removed from the program. Is there any plans for deprecating the first-input from the performance API?
