Has anyone got this working or is curious on how this works as well?

I'm trying to enable WCCP with my pfsense box and i'm not quite sure how it needs to be configured. I know that the GRE's tab under the assign interface is where I need to look.

Hello Tyler,

The WCCP works (at least we tested it) ONLY on Ubuntu 16.
I am pretty sure configuration on pfSense is completely different.

BTW WCCP is used to redirect access to HTTP(S) sites transparently to Squid proxies within your network.
But pfSense already has the ability to transparently filter HTTP(S), so what is the point of using WCCP?

Best regards,
Rafael

Hey Rafael,

The purpose would be to offload the CPU from a low end firewall from both a CPU and Memory perspective. While I could bump ssl on the pfsense box, doing so requires quite a bit of CPU. By going the GRE tunnel on this box, you could forward all traffic to a beefier VM that could handle the traffic load with no issues, All while keeping the same specs for the Firewall.

Since this post, I have actaully got a beefed up Firewall that supports 1gbps up and down as well as the decryption of ssl. It would still be a pretty cool concept to get working.

Hello Tyler,

Ok then clear. Not sure how WCCP will work from pfSense - I always got the impressing WCCP was Cisco proprietary technology.
