Hello everyone,

The next version of Web Safety 8.1 is released. Again, this version has some major technical breaking changes compared to version 8.0.

The following changes are included into this build:
  • Breaking Change - by default Admin UI is now running on HTTPS. Default certificate is self-signed - so you might need to click through the Self Signed Warning at the first connection. On HTTP port there is now a placeholder that explains this change and also contains the automatic redirect script and button to switch to continue through HTTPS. See more info at this Admin Guide article.
  • Added new proxy authentication scheme - Captive Portal. It can be used to authenticate users to modern Microsoft Azure Active Directory (cloud directory) as well as normal on-premises Active Directory and Local Users Database. This tutorial shows the typical steps required to integrate your proxy with Azure Active Directory.
  • Added support for Squid 5.5 on Ubuntu 20. The virtual appliance and Microsoft Azure and Amazon AWS images are now based on this version too.
The virtual appliance images can be downloaded from here:
Microsoft Azure and Amazon AWS images are being certified and submitted now. Should be available on Azure and AWS within next couple of days.

Upgrade steps required are described in the Admin Guide. Note we are leaving 7.6 as Old Stable as it was based on Squid 4 which some of you might prefer.

As always list of open issues is available on GitHub. Please do not hesitate to add more if something is missing or needs to be improved.

Best regards,
Dev Team

P.S. Are you interested in fully managed Web Safety instance deployed in the cloud automatically to decrease the administrative efforts for proxy management? We are starting a Cloud Proxy Project during this summer. Stay tuned.
