I see that google will no longer support the old uk.sci.weather newsgroup from 15 Feb 2024.
It has been hacked and has been showing gobbledygook for some time.

Sounds the height of incompetence if Google - of all people - can't deal with hackers.

More likely is that Google doesn't see £££$$$ in supporting.

It's a shame more haven't moved over to here. There seems an irrational anti google sentiment with a few still on the group, which I don't understand. I always found the inability to post photos etc an annoying limitation. Windows is a long way from perfect, but I've still moved on from MS-DOS. Though I still use the Dbase file format based Lotus Approach in place of Windows poor database offering - partly because I caught face the thought of re doing hundreds lotus approach macros, & many dozens of reports & views relating to my weather database. In the true meaning of a relational database only key fields are duplicated, a vital factor Approach encourages you to stick to.

Still, somewhat weather related, there have been fields full of daffodils (not Sols, which are earlier) in full flower for around 2 weeks now. I meant to take a photo of a particularly impressive one on the way to Sennen, but went sailing straight past. I must make an effort. The frost at the beginning of December seemed to encourage them once it quickly turned mild again.

No measurable rain for >48 hours now!

It's not, strictly speaking, a google group, which is why you can't do most of the things you can do in a true google group.. Google does a good job of keeping out hackers in groups set up under google. Gmail does an excellent job of identifying Spam.

UKSW could be reborn under google, but hasn't been for reasons expressed in my earlier post.

Yes, it is a usenet group set  up before google groups were available.
Therefore open to hackers apparently.
Google decided they would support this usenet group but evidently no longer.

I'm surprised more haven't come across to this group.

This group is by invitation only as far as I'm aware and is moderated. Looking at a small number of usenet groups shows alt.science.weather isn't the only one affected. And Google has never supported it, it was just a usenet reader.

If you can encourage some over Keith, please do so. I've tried with a couple and the response is simply anti google, it's not a proper newsreader etc. I don't get it as a reason. If you want to have conversations with fellow weather enthusiasts then what's wrong with using Google Groups? Usenet always had so many limitations as far as I was concerned.

I think the problem is that there are so many weather forums on the web nowadays.
For example the COL Weather Group-UK and Ireland on facebook, UK Weatherworld to name just two.
Most are moderated.

Anyone can ask to join this group, you don't have to be invited - just needs me to tick a box.  uk.sci.weather hasn't been "hacked" as such, it is just receiving a massive amount of spam posts.
