The sharp eyes might notice the Moët & Chandon cork.

Correction, Tesco Cava cork.

I don't think a flying cork was responsible as I always aim at the shed, about 90° to the left.

Unlikely to be a ricochet:-)

There had been some sharp frosts (minus 7°C) — and that after a very wet autumn. 
I presume that the soil in the pot was saturated and the water expanded when it froze and broke the plastic pot.

Pretty sure it wasn't the Cava cork!!!

I bet it was sunlight / UV that weakened the pot initially.

Quite likely.  That pot is perhaps seven years old plus an unknown time previously in the garden centre.

We seem to be getting another all day 'freost'.  Still  -1.1 °C at midday under blue skies.

I tried to go for a short walk on Nairn pier.  I was beaten by the cold even though well dressed with multiple layer, hat and mittens.

But the excellent bacon and eggs in the Harbour Cafe warmed me quickly.
