Received wisdom has it that the wind should be close to right angles to the mountains that might kick off the wave. But recent gliding observations have shown that the wind can be many degrees 'off' the perpendicular.
Glider pilots on Tuesday reached more than 20,000 feet in the lee of the Cairngorms.
