It's asking for a username and password. Anyone else finding this? After this I only have one other source for synops.

It certainly gives a rude 'unauthorised' response to me.

Perhaps it's time for me to scale back on decoding them, I retire at Christmas as well. I don't seem to have the contacts I used to have for such things. :-(

Ogimet? https://www.ogimet.com/home.phtml.en. Though synops are no longer disseminated as far as I know, it's all GRIB (?) data now so you're dependant on someone translating them. Freddie should know more.

Close - it's BUFR data.  I think SYNOP dissemination stopped around 2016 or so.  So Metman2012 is correct - you are at the mercy of translators.

Yes fortunately Ogimet is the most comprehensive site for synops. There are some anomalies with it's decoding, namely, UK sunshine, it often gets rounded up/down, so that COD site was my first go to as the conversions seemed more accurate. I have a couple of links for Ogimet as the main one doesn't work on the cruise ships for some reason!

Before I used to have FSU, Albany.SA that used to list all the synops. Ogimet is my last line of defence. But you are right, synops are a thing from the past, I think it was 2006 when everything went to BUFR.

Does anyone know of any that are still running?

Thanks for your replies.

Definitely wasn't 2006 Keith.  The Met Office didn't start transmitting SYNOPs in BUFR until 2011-ish.  I worked on that project.  The 2016 date I gave was for the cessation of plain text SYNOPs worldwide.

Seem,s to back now :-)

It must have been 2006 when I got wind of the demise of synops, but it was a few years before the switch was made.
