I don't know if BBC SW have just let the cat out of the bag a little bit before it was officially announced by the Met Office, but David Braine has just said in the local weather that Saturday's low (Dietrich) will be the next named storm - Brian.

I don't think it looks powerful enough to be named.  Certainly not worthy of the name Brian anyway!

I've just asked the Met Office on Twitter an they say they haven't named it yet. I don't know what's going on.

... Met Eireann are talking openly about 'Brian' (to the meeja) and the scheme allows *either* organisation to trigger the name independently of the other. Unusual but that's how it's set up: however in this case, I can't see an *official* trigger on the MetEireann site so perhaps they're simply assuming the name will be drawn out of the bag?

The winds are forecast to be stronger here in the Southwest than Aileen and Ophelia, so it would be dumb not to name it.

Brian Hoskins would be honoured to have a mid-latitude cyclone named after him.

... Not a bad (forecast) outcome (assuming verified of course), within a relatively short distance: 45 mbar fall in pressure. A 'bomb' indeed!

Seems that David Braine was right all along.
"An intense low-pressure system that is forecast to affect southern Britain on Saturday has been named as Storm Brian by Met Éireann."

The Norwegians have thoughtfully added a download button so that you can save a MP4 animation file (~20 MB).

It's a pity that they couldn't have called it Marlene to go with the Dietrich. :)
