Leaf of Lady’s Mantle in my garden showing the “Lotus Effect”.  Ultrahydrophobicity : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultrahydrophobicity

That article is worth reading and explanations are simple and easy to understand.  For example:

I've took similar pictures after overnight rain but never wondered why it happens, leaves on most other plants must just shed their water droplets, but they seem to stick on Lady's mantle. I'll have a read after I've had another moan about the Met Office :-)

It's all explained in that equation.  Maybe Bruce, best not to advertise that you didn't pay attention at Primary School:-)

But just think if Ultrahydrophobicity could be used on windows or car paint.  No need ever to have to wash the car again.

And those signs in hotel bathrooms about re-using towels “to save the planet”:

“With our ultraphobic spray (™) and you won’t ever need to use an environmentally damaging towel again”

I'm sure there's some house paint you can buy like that. I saw it on Grand Designs once! The water gathers in droplets and runs off, cleaning the paint at the same time. Apparently it should only need repainting every 30 years or something.

It's already been invented:
And I have been using it for some time without making the connecetion with water droplets on leaves.  Rain X

It was so wet today (31st August) that I feared my garden rain gauge would overflow and cause a flood:-)

Rain has stopped now at 1715 BST

You might just make out an orange object in the left background.  That’s my windsock to help young birds.  But not really needed today as very little wind.

In contrast today, we here in SW Devon, were forecast for a good soaking as the cold front whistled through this morning.
In the end the rain band fizzled out as it crossed the peninsula and apart from a few spots of rain left absolutely zilch in my 5 inch gauge.

It now feels proper chilly at 14C in a polar maritime airmass.
Autumn starts tomorrow.
