Here's the track of low Yap according to the midnight GFS model.

It did remind me that it's been forty years since the Fastnet race storm.

Spookily it was another low 'Y' back then in August 1979.

I was looking at how low 'Y' developed for similarities with Friday's low, but low 'Y' intensified much more rapidly as it came into SW Ireland on a more westerly track than 'Yap' is forecast to do, and was a much deeper affair with a minimum central pressure of 979 hPa.

The name 'Yap' is given to it by the Institute of Meteorology in Berlin, but I'm sure it won't be too long before someone else lays claim to it and give it another name.

I was camping in North Devon at that time.  I remember it well - particularly the poor families forced to shelter in the toilets as their tents were blown away by the wind!

I was just a yappy pre-teen back then ;-)

My memory of the night of the Fastnet storm is rather different.  An unmarried lady I became interested in that evening was uncooperative :-(

The ICON model takes Yap faster and further east

Were you forced to shelter in the toilets too? ;-)

Fortunately, pretty well all the 400 boats will be back in Plymouth by the time the storm hits this year.
I've been down to the race village to tell them how lucky they've been.
Mind you, some might still be caught if they try to sail home in the next few days.
Hardly likely though, unless some sponsor wants their million pound yacht at some other location for advertising purposes.

My earlier post reminded me of this Jonathan Agnew and Brian Johnston cricket commentary:
Apologies to those who have heard it before.  But it's worth listening to again anyway.

ICON has a slower more westerly track for Yap
