Woke up this morning to thunder. Several distant rumbles between 07:30 & 08:30.

When I checked, lightning occurred from Scilly (35 miles to the west) to Truro (25 miles to the east) so in a band 60 miles wide.

However, despite the bright echoes, rainfall amounts (at least here) were very small. 0.4mm total. The drops that did reach the ground were quite an impressive size.

All cleared away north eastwards now.

Yes, it is medium level instability with a fair depth of dry air below the cloud base which is up at around 7000 feet.

Interesting cloud looking west from here over Cornwall at the that tome Graham.
Called asperitus I believe. Has the appearance of rippling waves in the cloud base.
The instability for the storms apparently due to a warm moist plume of air at mid levels originating from Sahara.

The storms seem to be moving north and missing us in west Devon.

Steady rise in temperature as the storms cleared, as demonstrated by Camborne

Some more patchy rain moving north, just to the east this time.

On the tip of Cornwall

According to Cornwall live a few 100 houses without power in Falmouth, Truro & Penzance. Mind you, they also said 'following the heavy downpours'. I had to drive up the Truro late morning, and didn't see so much as a puddle, justly vaguely damp patches.
