I've just spent a couple of days writing an application to scrape the sferic images from Blitzortung and overlay them on a map. It works very well. One of the reasons I wrote it was to capture images and archive them in any thundery spell and then generate an animated GIF.
In writing this app, I discovered that this is already possible and that you can create an animated GIF for any time period back to 2008 very easily. So below I've attached an animated GIF of sferics for the evening of the 23rd of June 2016 in 15 minute time steps, this to me just underlines the advantage that a web forum has over a newsgroup.
As, or is anyone out there, thinking of investing in one of the new System Blue Kits that Blitzortung have developed?
In my case, it may not be so much for becoming an active listening station (because I'm terrible with electronics and computer hardware of any type), but more to get at the raw sferic data that being a member gives you. Having said that I would still think that you would be restricted to using that data in a non-commercial way.
